Transmission Planning Engineer
Giving everyone in the world access to clean, reliable, affordable energy will require substantial expansion of global electricity transmission networks. VEIR is developing a new generation of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS)-based transmission lines, enabling long distance, reliable, low loss, cost-effective power transfer in far smaller right-of-ways. VEIR's innovations overcome the main barriers to transmission expansion, enabling the world to access the very lowest cost renewable power.
THE ROLE:
The Transmission Planning Engineer will be responsible for building and leading power flow studies representing VEIR's superconductors for our growing customer pipeline. You will work closely with our growth strategy, commercial, regulatory, and product development team members, as well as with customers and external partners, to continuously evaluate and improve VEIR's transmission study process. The ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and continuously adapt are essential skills for this role. VEIR seeks an individual who is excited about modeling transmission systems and the ability to apply them to highlight the value of VEIR's innovative hardware technology.
This position is expected to be based at VEIR HQ in Woburn, MA; we are willing to consider hybrid or remote locations for well-qualified candidates. You are:
- You are an experienced electrical engineer. You worked on and delivered solutions related to transmission planning, with a focus on renewable energy or advanced conductors.
- Experienced in power systems simulation. You are an expert user of power flow analysis tools (e.g. PSS/E), and transmission and generation capacity expansion. (e.g. Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS))
- An excellent communicator. You clearly communicate goals, timelines, progress, and risks to team members at VEIR and to external partners and advisors.
- A collaborator. You can work cross-functionally with team members, external partners, and customers to build and support analytical tools that reflect diverse interests and perspectives.
- Analytical. You have experience with a variety of analytical approaches and know how to apply them to solve different types of problems effectively. You know how to apply analytical rigor to drive strategic insights.
- Creative. You find creative ways to solve problems in the absence of pre-existing data and tools.
- Establish creative analytical approaches that enable VEIR to efficiently gather market data and convert it to market intelligence and identify the best locations to deploy VEIR transmission lines and the best VEIR transmission line solutions to address specific customer needs.
- Understand the behavior of VEIR's advanced superconductor solution on electrical transmission systems.
- Perform studies to understand how VEIR lines will integrate into and operate with existing power system infrastructure and components.
- Work alongside VEIR's transmission line design engineers to propose actual transmission project options to solve specific customer needs.
- Work closely with the strategy, commercial, regulatory, and product development teams to continuously update and validate model input assumptions and analytics data sources and approaches.
- Support the company's mission to unlock the transmission capacity necessary for deep reductions in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- Comply with safety standards and company guidelines
- Promote safety, efficiency, teamwork, and collaboration
- The position requires someone who is highly motivated and organized with project management, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Experience working in a start-up company and/or in a product development environment and/or as a consultant in the energy industry
- Degree in electrical/power system engineering or related field
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage analytical tools that help resolve complex problems in creative ways
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively and clearly communicate goals, findings, and issues
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-motivated and directed
- MS in electrical/power systems engineering or related field.
- Competency in multiple power flow software and capacity expansion models
- 2+ years of experience and success in an early-stage technology start-up company or in a consulting role in the energy industry
- Willingness to learn the engineering, economic, and regulatory factors that drive transmission investment decisions
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- 3 months: Understand VEIR product development, commercial project pipeline, and strategic growth processes and goals.
- 6-12 months: Become the owner of transmission power flow studies internally at VEIR.
