General Summary

The CMA is responsible for providing direct patient care to urology patients in the clinic setting under the supervision of a Physician, Physicians Assistant and/or Nurse Practitioner. The CMA is also expected to ethically perform assigned job duties in a manner that is consistent with the Core Values of Urology Centers of Alabama (UCA) listed below:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Incumbents must have one of the following to be eligible for consideration:
  2. Must be a Certified Medical Assistant from an approved program.
  3. Must be licensed as practical nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  4. Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  5. Or have an extensive work record, with approved references, as a Medical Assistant.
  6. Must maintain license/credential as outlined in Minimum Qualification #1 without lapse.
  7. Must have a Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification. Certification must be renewed and up to date.
  8. Must display an understanding of sound patient care, including maintaining competency in UCA required areas. See clinical competency for further details.
  9. After orientation to UCA is completed, incumbent must have the ability to display the following:
  10. Must be able to perform catheterization using aseptic technique.
  11. Must show the ability to obtain blood, urine, or other specimens for lab analysis, using venipuncture, midstream, catheter, or other approved method.
  12. Must show the ability to perform sterilization techniques on instruments, patient rooms, or equipment as needed.
  13. Must be able to type documents, email, forms, and other communications with minimal to no errors.
  14. Must show proficiency in use of a variety of office equipment including a PC, Windows, MSOffice, EMR system, multi-line telephone, copier, facsimile machine, etc.
  15. Must be able to travel between locations using personal transportation. UCA does pay for mileage and time as according to the UCA Travel Policy.
  16. Must show the ability to have excellent interpersonal skills and communication to interact with all walks of life, internal and external to UCA, from all educational or cultural backgrounds.
  17. Must show the ability to work independently or within a team in a fast-paced environment.

Licensure, Certification, Registration Requirements

The incumbent must hold license/certification as one of the following:

  1. Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from an approved program.
  2. Licensed Practical Nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
  3. Registered Nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Supervisory Requirements

This position will not directly supervise any other staff members.

?While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing approximately 25 pounds, and occasionally lift objects weighing over 50lbs. Employee, with assistance, may be required to lift a patient weighing over 100lbs.

Essential Functions

  1. Direct and coordinate services to ensure a smooth operating clinic, consulting with Clinical Director, Site Coordinator and Site Supervisor.
  2. Obtain/Update/Amend patient health history, including current medications, allergies, and recent surgeries.
  3. Obtain and document vital signs, height, and weight in the EMR.
  4. Administer PO, IM, subcutaneous and intravesical medications.
  5. Perform urinalysis, bladder scans, and flow rates as prescribed by the physician.
  6. Assist with exams, treatments, and procedures as needed.
  7. Prepare cultures and slides for microscopic examinations.
  8. Perform and/or assist with aseptic and sterile catheter insertions.
  9. Perform specimen collection for lab tests using various collection methods per UCA practice.
  10. Provide education to patients and family members.
  11. Complete nursing documentation in the EMR.
  12. Complete orders, tasks, and messages routed by physician.
  13. Clean, disinfect, sterilize instruments.
  14. Maintains exam rooms or suites ensuring that they are properly stocked with necessary supplies prior to and during a patient visit.
  15. Assist with prior authorizations as needed.
  16. Notify appropriate UCA leadership when supplies are needed or equipment malfunctions.
  17. Act as patient escort, assisting with preparation of patient for visit.
  18. Communicate effectively with physician, secretary, and other members of the clinical team, as well as with inter- and intra-departmental team members, patients, and vendors,
