Washington, United States Inside Higher Ed Full time

Communications and External Affairs Director The American Sociological Association (ASA) is seeking a Director of Communications and External Affairs. With increasing economic inequality, rising political fractiousness, and health disparities, among other issues, sociologists have a crucial role to play. This role gives the ASA the ability to influence public policy and perceptions through ensuring sociologists are heard.

The ASA is a US organization for sociologists, comprising of 10,000 members of academia, teaching professionals, and writers alike. The ASA aims to promote sociology and utilize it to aid society and professional societies' members. While the ASA is based in Washington, this role is currently entirely remote.

The main responsibilities for the role are: Design and oversee an integrated content dissemination strategy that targets both internal and external audiences, including but not limited to e-newsletters, social media, and the website. Develop and manage a public-facing social media strategy to promote ASA's research, philosophy, and knowledge. Track and analyze member and non-member interaction with ASA news, activities, leadership, products, and advocacy measures. Respond to news coverage that impacts the ASA and its mission-related policies. Act as a liaison to external audiences and ensure that the Executive Director and the ASA leaders interact with the press and other influential stakeholders. Enhance and shield the ASA's history, brand, and mission. Develop both passive and active outreach and strategic thought leadership outreach, enhance ASA's reputation and enhance public engagement of sociology research and knowledge. Manage the operating budget for the department. Collaborate with relevant organizational committees and other volunteer groups as needed. The role reports to the Executive Director and has supervisory authority over the Senior Communications Associate and the Web Specialist.

Preferred candidate qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. A graduate degree is a plus. Minimum of 10 years of experience in similar roles, such as project management and budget management. Media relations or journalism experience. Experience in contemporary digital communication methods. Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to present academic content in a clear, understandable manner for general audiences. Works effectively as both a team member and individual contributor. Familiarity with social science and higher education. The ASA compensates well, with a salary commensurate with experience and full benefits.

To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume to Heather Washington, Interim Executive Director, at hwashington@asanet.org. ASA is an equal opportunity employer, and does not allow discrimination against employees on any basis proscribed by law, and prioritizes collaborative, inclusive workplaces based on merit.
