Summary: The Prospect Research Specialist is responsible for conducting research and analysis on prospective major and principal gift donors. Reporting to the Executive Director of Analytics, the specialist partners and works closely with the fundraising team to identify, research, and analyze new prospects for qualification.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Supports 30+ fundraising partners by providing high-level research on individuals, corporations, and foundations upon request.
  • Meets with fundraisers on a regular basis to understand their research needs and craft effective research strategies to help significantly bolster their fundraising efforts.
  • Identifies a minimum of 1,200 new unmanaged philanthropic leads annually possessing significant giving potential and/or a strong affinity to the university or a project, by researching constituents on lists generated through data analytics and lead generation workflows.
  • Performs research to prioritize a minimum of 200 high-net-worth prospects identified from the philanthropic lead pool annually, facilitating immediate fundraiser qualification for project-based fundraising endeavors.
  • Supports Leadership Giving Officers (LGOs) by providing philanthropic leads for qualification into their pipeline on a semi-annual basis.
  • Conducts research and evaluation of past donors and potential supporters within fundraiser portfolios based on prospect map and other relevant metrics, aiming to prioritize them effectively to capture fundraisers' immediate attention.
  • Executes efforts to closely align work with a focus on the MetroCluster based national roll-out strategy for fundraising.
  • Constantly seeks methods and processes that help streamline the research and discovery phases, making them more efficient and effective.
  • Monitors a select cohort of principal-level donor prospects and delivers prompt notifications regarding significant news and updates.
  • Conducts research on constituents and their philanthropic potential utilizing diverse subscription tools, library databases, web-based inquiries, wealth screening data, and other relevant data/metrics stored within the CRM system.
  • Collaborates and supports the Associate Director of Prospect Development and the Director of Records for prospect management and record management as required.
  • Contributes to a transparent and equitable organizational culture where ethical policies and practices are understood and lived out by all staff.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor's degree required along with a minimum of two years of experience in the field of prospect research. Education in research-based fields like Journalism, Library Science or Library and Information Science is desirable.
  • Excellent basic data management skills in Excel including adding data, sorting, filtering, and formatting prospect lists.
  • Strong project management skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to create new programs from the ground-up.
  • Ability to learn and use cloud platforms like Google drive to manage prospect lists and use ClickUp for work and project management.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work under time constraints, meet deadlines, and demonstrate flexibility in instances of shifting priorities; possess a strong sense of accountability.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment; work independently and as part of a team; supervise and train others in a matrixed environment to achieve mutual goals.
  • Possess an aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving; ability to think strategically about the potential implications of information found and willing to make calls, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of intellectual curiosity and the motivation and ability to apply information in innovative ways; orientation to process improvement, initiative, problem solving, and adaptability.
