PRIMARY FUNCTION
The focus of this key role is to lead and support the design and development of electronics systems for the next generation of SawStop products.
The Electrical Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the high-performance team that delivers effective and reliable electronic circuit designs and other electrical product components to Product Projects. The Electrical Engineering team interfaces regularly with Software Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Mechanical Engineering, Compliance Engineering, and the Testing Team as well as Product Management, Procurement, Quality, and Service teams in order to bring inspiring products to market and to support an unparalleled customer journey. Minimal supervision is required; the Electrical Engineering Manager takes initiative to work collaboratively within his/her team and other departments.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Management
- Provide regular personnel management including clear communication of goals and expectations while ensuring compliance to SawStop policies
- Review and approve team members' work packages
- Support team members' personal needs and remove roadblocks
- Assess team member performance and support personal development goals
- Participate in annual expense and CAPEX budget planning and manage EE budget
- Interview and hire new staff as needed and contribute to roadmap development and staffing level determinations
- Represent Electrical Engineering issues and interests within the projects and organization
- New Product Development
- Work with team members and Project Managers to develop project plans
- Support development of electrical architectures that meet new product goals, and propose new technological approaches to overcome limitations
- Assess quality of designs and qualification (test) plans
- Ensure compliance to external product and device standards including collaboration with Product Compliance Engineer
- Provide BOM cost estimates
- Technical Functional Leadership
- Develop best practices and standardization for electrical engineering tools and processes
- Identify potential (IP) intellectual property to expand SawStop patent coverage
- Manage electrical engineering lab, equipment, and supplies
- Product Maintenance
- Support Operations team to ensure up-time and low defect rate for brake cartridge manufacturing
- Support Sustaining Engineering, Service, and Sales teams to analyze and resolve warranty issues and customer feedback
- Identify and execute on design improvements to address field quality issues
- Qualify design changes, alternate materials, and parts from new tooling
- Lead product improvement projects and guide engineering team members for quality improvement, cost reduction, and performance upgrades
- Miscellaneous
- Provide timely and constructive performance feedback to functional managers about their direct reports
- Some international travel is required, especially to support development builds
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
- 10+ years of relevant industry experience, including past management experience of an engineering group
- Experience and demonstrated expertise in analog and mixed signal circuit board design, such as low-level current and voltage measurement applications, sensitive measuring equipment, etc.
- Familiar with Agile and waterfall development methods
- Good familiarity with lab equipment experience (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, LCR meter, etc.)
- Excellent problem-solving skills and accountability to drive issues to closure
- Demonstrated desire for learning and applying a continuous improvement approach
- Ability to communicate and collaborate across functional groups and diverse audiences, while working in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Hands on problem-solving and root cause analysis skills
- Demonstrated experience with system level design, integration, and testing
- Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
- 5+ years working in a new product development environment, preferably power tools, automotive, or durable goods
- 5+ years in a technical management role
- Familiar with electrical compliance and regulatory requirements including EMI/EMC design requirements and testing
- Experience with line-powered devices and electric motors
- Experience working with Asian manufacturing companies
- Experience using table saws and other woodworking tools
- Hands on practical skills - soldering to build and test prototype PCBAs
