Description

This position is responsible to help support the City of Merriam's mission by helping to ensure the finance operations are carried out effectively. This includes performing a variety of complex professional and technical accounting and finance functions in maintaining the fiscal records and systems of the City.

Requirements

  • Assist in the preparation of the City's annual financial report, prepare materials and documentation for outside auditors; assist in preparation of final audit report; prepare adjusting entries to fairly state the financial position of the City.
  • Assist with the preparation of the City's annual budget; prepare schedules and work-papers to assist in the formulation of budget estimates; assist in preparation of final budget documentation.
  • Manage the accounting process for fixed assets and capital projects; record adjustments to capital project expenditures and revenues; record acquisition, disposition and transfers for fixed assets; work with various City staff to monitor fixed assets inventory.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations; prepare reconciliations of investment schedules; reconcile various other asset, liability and revenue accounts.
  • Assist with the development of accounting rules, policies, and procedures to be followed by City staff.
  • Prepare special accounting reports; prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports; prepare other accounting reports as needed.
  • Calculate semi-annual TIF payment amounts due as needed.
  • Administer the City purchasing card program.
  • Analyze monthly sales tax reports for missing payments.
  • Manage quarterly and annual PCI Compliance with credit card processors.
  • Compile property tax exemptions when necessary.
  • Promote City values at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, business administration, public administration or a related field. Certified Public Accountant preferred.
  • Two years of experience in professional accounting work, preferably governmental accounting or governmental auditing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Working knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers and associated equipment.
  • Working knowledge of accounting software and systems.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain detailed and accurate financial, accounting and statistical records; ability to accurately count, record and balance accounting transactions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
