Position Information

This position is 7 hours/day and 184 days/year. Starting hourly pay is $30.73.

Nature of Work

Under the supervision of a Speech/Language Pathologist, this position conducts assessments and provides speech therapy treatment, such as receptive and expressive language, articulation, and fluency and voice to reduce the impact of speech and/or language barriers on children's learning and educational opportunities. This is achieved by assisting in conducting developmental and other related assessments; researching and planning interventions for students in accordance with IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals; maintaining student's records and reporting on their progress; assisting in determining IEP goals and providing modifications to school and daily life activities to facilitate student's participation in these. All required decisions are done under the supervision of a Speech-Language Pathologist.

Typical Class Responsibilities

  • Implements therapeutic activities, programs, and treatments under the supervision of the Speech-Language Pathologist by choosing therapeutic activities and materials; creates custom therapeutic materials based on the student's accessibility needs and selects scaffolded intervention strategies to support IEP goals.
  • Conducts students' screening and assessment under the direct supervision of Speech-Language Pathologist by selecting the screening procedures; notates the screening session to gather data, which is used to select the intervention option that best benefits the student.
  • Responds to inquiries from families, teachers, and other staff that fall within the scope of practice; forwards out of scope inquires to the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist when these are out of their scope of practice; communicates and provides instructional information to students, families, teachers, and other staff members as needed.
  • Coordinates the development of intervention plans with the Speech- Language Pathologist, classroom staff, and other related service providers; assists with the implementation of behavioral and academic intervention plans in accordance with IEP goals; discusses student progress and concerns.
  • Provides indirect services to assist with transitioning skills across environments, such as school, the community, and home; Indirect Services includes selecting Assistive Technology, resources and education to parents and in-service training opportunities for support staff that helps the student apply transitioning skills across environments; identifies additional opportunities the school can offer to ensure students can practice communication and language skills across environments.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Training and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree from a speech-language pathology assistant program that is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of North Central Association of Colleges or its equivalent, or Bachelor's degree in communication sciences or disorders with additional transcript credit in instruction in assistant-level service delivery practices, and Completion of at least one hundred (100) hours of supervised field work experience (Minnesota Statutes, section 148.5192 Subd. 1).

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects
