SUMMARY

Responsible for a variety of accounting practices either as a specialist or generalist. May specialize in premium, claims, taxation, investment, reinsurance, financial analysis, or general accounting. Performs routine to complex activities requiring knowledge of insurance company operations, statutory accounting, generally accepted accounting principles, and insurance taxation.

Familiar with underwriting, claims, commissions, and rating practices and procedures. Reads, analyzes, and interprets various accounting journal entries, registers, and directives. Assists with troubleshooting, resolving discrepancies, and initiating corrective action. Performs the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Compiles and prepares statutory and GAAP financial information to generate entries to general ledger accounts and documents business transactions.
  • Performs month-end close using the Company's computer system and compiles financial records on a monthly basis for the preparation of financial reports.
  • Prepares and reviews reporting documents for outside organizations, taxation authorities, and all states in which the Company conducts business.
  • Prepares, maintains, reports, and audits agency transactions.
  • Verifies and monitors claims-related transactions and catastrophe activity to ensure accuracy, and reports results to Management, as needed.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the Company's reinsurance contracts and reports related accounting transactions to reinsurers.
  • Audits contracts and maintains the Company's computer accounting databases.
  • Processes accounts payable; records and monitors company expense accounts in comparison with the budget.
  • Processes monthly corporate credit card statements to ensure timely submission and accurate reporting of expenses.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and three-year business plan, as needed.
  • Assists independent auditing firm, and state examiners, as needed.
  • Assists in the study and design of workflow procedures, implementation of accounting systems, and preparation of work schedules, that create workflow efficiencies, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting.
  • Experience in performing accounting, general ledger processing and close related matters.
  • Experience in using accounting data and information to analyze and articulate financial results.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to multi-task effectively and efficiently.
  • Possesses good interpersonal and relationship skills.
  • A knowledge of Office Productivity software such as Word Processing, Communications and advanced knowledge of Excel is required. Experience with accounting-related processing software recommended.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and 2-6 years related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The Company may expect the employee to successfully complete insurance accounting courses through the AICPCU, based on experience.
