Position:

The Manager, Environment Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing and maintaining industrial and laboratory best practice safety programs and processes associated with developing, producing and processing medical radioisotopes for all NorthStar facilities. This position will be responsible for leading and managing compliance with OSHA, EPA, Wisconsin Department of Health Services and other applicable regulatory requirements. The Manager, EHS is a key member of the EHS Team which includes general safety, industrial hygiene, environmental, occupational medicine, health physics; has primary responsibility for implementation and maintenance of general safety and industrial hygiene programs; and directly oversees the EHS Specialists and Technicians.

Physical demands may include, but not be limited to, specific vision abilities including near vision/acuity and visual color discrimination.

The work environment may include exposure to a heated/air-conditioned indoor office / manufacturing / cleanroom setting with adequate ventilation and lighting and outdoor environments with varying temperatures. The noise level may vary from quiet to loud. Employees must be willing and able to wear various types of PPE, including, but not limited to, respirators, gloves, safety glasses, and protective clothing, as required by the job to ensure safety in potentially hazardous conditions. Specific cleanroom requirements include employees needing to inform leadership about any health condition that may have an adverse effect on products, as well as compliance with gowning protocols. This means all jewelry, including physically attached items, must not interfere with the effectiveness of personal protective equipment. In addition, all cosmetics, fragranced products (perfumes, aftershave, etc.), and nail products are prohibited, including clear nail polish, artificial nails, and nail extenders.

The company is a radiopharmaceutical manufacturer and radiation may be present in manufacturing and laboratory areas. Employees may be required to be monitored using company provided dosimetry and bioassay testing.

Responsibilities:
  • Effectively communicate safety and quality issues raised by customers or staff in a timely manner.
  • Champion continuous improvement of Safety culture with general EHS in collaboration with Radiation Safety/Health Physics staff and programs. Mentor and support NorthStar Safety Committee activities and initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain environmental, health and safety programs and processes to protect NorthStar personnel, visitors and contractors to meet or exceed key performance indicators in OSHA related and other applicable regulatory requirements. Manage environmental compliance program by ensuring appropriate monitoring, sampling, and reporting is completed on time.
  • Manage a team of EHS Specialists and Technicians which includes training, evaluating performance, setting performance goals, and coaching.
  • Develop and provide safety-related communications and training for NorthStar employees and contractors, and ensure all EHS regulatory requirements are maintained.
  • Review plant projects for EHS impacts and management of change requirements. Ensure that documented hazard analyses and safety assessments for projects and processes are performed.
  • Maintain OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping compliance, analyze and communicate EHS trends. Collaborate with Human Resources and management on occupational health programs and Return-to-Work for work related injuries.
  • Champion the implementation and maintenance of the corporate EHS management systems Ensure incident investigations are conducted by appropriate site resources for EHS incidents and near misses. Monitor and report to site leadership on the status and effectiveness of corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Liaise community partnerships with local authorities and industry partners. Act as a key stakeholder in Business Continuity Planning and Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) activities.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelors Degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or Science and minimum six (6) years of experience as part of a comprehensive Occupational Safety Program; or equivalent combination of education and experience. High familiarity with OSHA and EPA regulations and good manufacturing practices. Minimum two (2) years of leadership experience required.

Preferred Experience Requirements:

Significant experience in a technical manufacturing or production environment, including control of exposure to hazardous materials and environments; and additional experience as part of a comprehensive Occupational Safety Program, beyond the minimum six (6) years. Project management experience is preferred.

Preferred Licensure / Certification:

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) qualification, Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) qualification or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).
