Job Description:

Under the direction of the Director of Quality and Safety, the Risk and Patient Safety Manager will assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of a Risk Management and Patient Safety Program that will sustain fundamental improvements in the healthcare outcomes and patient safety of Beth Israel Lahey Health-Behavioral Services. The Risk Management and Patient Safety program includes proactive and preventive strategies, as well as a reliable system for reacting to and evaluating adverse events and near-misses. The Risk and Patient Safety Manager reviews and analyzes safety events, complaints and grievances (RLDatix), assesses the severity/harm to patients, conducts follow-up internal review and/or investigations with leadership, staff, and patients. The Risk and Patient Safety Manager will help develop reports to monitor trends and analyze opportunities for improvement. The candidate will provide risk management education and assist in policy/standard development. The candidate will promote organizational patient safety initiatives.

Responsibilities:

1. Participate in the Peer Review process under the direction of the Director of Quality and Safety and the Associate Chief Medical Officer.

2. Responsible for coordinating clinical and systems investigation and analysis of safety events and quality of care complaints. Conducts interviews of clinical and non-clinical colleagues involved in safety events.

3. Responsible for coordinating the Root Cause Analysis process for safety events as deemed appropriate by the Director of Quality and Safety and Associate Chief Medical Officer.

4. Maintains safety reporting system, tracking and evaluating safety events. Triages reports, verifies and corrects data entry of information in safety reports and prepares reports for organizational clinical leadership.

5. Provides consultation and education for BILH-BS colleagues. Advises on risk management and patient safety issues, requirements and strategies and works with divisions to evaluate and improve internal processes and procedures.

6. In collaboration with the Director of Quality and Safety, the Risk and Patient Safety Manager is responsible for providing a proactive response to adverse events by communicating instruction, providing internal and external customer service responsiveness; and by managing proactive communication plans with program and divisional leadership, patients and their families during internal investigation of unexpected outcomes and complaints.

7. Maintains knowledge of professional industry and regulatory trends and practices through participation in relevant professional organizations and attendance at conferences and other continuing education programs.

8. Has the authority to direct and support employees' daily work activities related to risk management and patient safety. Has the direct responsibility to undertake the following employment actions: assignment of tasks related to patient and staff safety events and follow-up with staff and leadership to ensure tasks are completed.

9. Provides coverage for Quality Manager when needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in healthcare related field, humanities or business required. Master's degree (i.e., MA, MHA, MBA, MPH) preferred.
1-3 years related work experience required in risk management, patient safety, business operations, or performance improvement.
Knowledge of and experience with RL Datix and electronic medical records.
Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of root cause analysis and failure mode and effects analysis.
Ability to analyze data and formulate meaningful information. Ability to work with highly sensitive and confidential information with appropriate discretion.
Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.
Cross coverage of Quality Manager duties as indicated.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience preferred with RL Datix adverse event reporting computer software product.
Training in patient safety or risk management and quality/performance improvement.
Improvement methodology, concepts, education and implementation.
