Principal Engineer Gum SME (Subject Matter Expert)

The Principal Engineer Gum SME/Technical Leader is a critical role within the Global R&D Team. This role is part of the Global Process Development and Deployment team and responsible for developing and delivering new processes to support global Innovation, Freedom to Operate, and Sustainability programs as well as supporting complex regional projects requiring process development expertise.

This role creates, manages, and updates Global Process Specifications and standards, supporting project Teams (regional and global) in translating process design and development to deployment, coaching and mentoring R&D associates, and partnering with internal and external process and engineering partners to set standards for current and future process needs.

The role works closely with Product Development, Factory Innovation, Science and Technology, Quality and Food Safety, Supply Chain (Engineering, Operations, etc.), Commercial in order to design, develop and implement processes from concept to delivery of finished product. The job holder may be asked to implement projects and may also cover external manufacturing sites.

This role is regarded as the global process expert in Gum technology and is expected to provide support and/or consulting services when deviating from existing process specifications to ensure that any changes and/or modifications of equipment or process settings can still deliver product key quality attributes (KQAs).

This position requires deep technical knowhow to support and execute both global and regional process development needs and will leverage external perspective (suppliers, vendors, etc.) when needed to solve process development challenges. They have Advanced skill level to influence key stakeholders. Able to actively build the strategy and lead technical teams to generate ideas and/or approaches to initiatives. Develops business cases from functional perspective. As a principal Engineer SME, you will inform the business strategy and may work on all categories and brands, based on the needs of the business.

What are we looking for?
  • Bachelor of Science or degree equivalent in engineering, chemical engineering or a technical area including chemistry, or food science is required.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in engineering, chemical engineering or a technical area including chemistry, or food science.
  • Demonstrated world class expertise on gum processing technology.
  • Proven Project management skills typically acquired through minimum of 10 years of professional experience in leading NPD projects as a technical member on a cross-functional team.
  • Minimum of 10 years hands on experience in the development and successful launch of new products, packages and processes in relevant field
  • Hands-on experience in the development of new processes, leveraging existing and/or new technology.
  • Good influencing, negotiation and drive for results skills
  • Ability to solve problems in a creative, collaborative, and innovative manner.
  • Experience working in factories, Lab or pilot plant.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and learning agility.
  • Track record of management of complex projects through execution, with cross functional teams
  • Good collaboration and partnership with cross functional Team members across R&D, Supply, and Commercial
  • Additional Preferred: Black Belt in Six Sigma, Experience in working with outside vendors, Hands on experience in the development and successful launch of new processes in FMCG; Experience working in Food innovation, Flexible teams, Universities/Research Companies.
What will be your key responsibilities?
  • Coaching and mentoring process development and engineering associates.
  • Provide training (classroom and hands-on) on process technologies.
  • AHC support and partnership with Supply (IE, Regional Engineering, Site Engineering) and Factory Innovation.
  • Setting Global Specifications Standards, with line of sight to future process and technology evolutions.
  • Serves as a technical expert contact for process development (global reach) on particular technologies and unit operations.
  • Remains abreast of new developments in food technologies, packaging, design, category trends and related fields by forming strong partnerships with vendors and equipment suppliers.
  • Responsible for delivering process development activities and is accountable for the execution of the allocated programs to bring project through to commercialization (at internal and external sites).
  • Maintains and implements Global Process Standards for core products and new innovations.
  • Ensures that the process development designs deliver products to meet the consumer, brand, and quality key attributes (KQAs).
  • Role supports Factory Innovation and Engineering in implementing, innovating and optimizing current and future assets and delivering global process specification for new, modified, and/or existing manufacturing processes.
  • Partners with Global Supply Chain and S&T to identify and deliver new and/or optimized process specifications, including digital transformation initiatives.
  • Responsible for supporting complex regional process development needs, including complex troubleshooting when new or existing manufacturing processes are not delivering to the designed and aligned process specification.
  • Connects with peers in other regions, other R&D functions to share best practices in support of global deployment of new innovations and FTO programs.
  • Leverages Six Sigma tools for process troubleshooting.
  • Works with Supply Chain to design and develop process specifications for agile and concept "scale" production lines.
  • Partners with R&D Digital Transformation Team to create a digital roadmap to support use of new digital tools for data collection and analysis, as well as predictive modeling and automation, where applicable.
  • Coaching in competency building for new sites, training planning and delivering training.
  • Is or can develop into a Digital Engineer for their specific subject matter expertise. This refers to the design of applications utilizing digital technology. Digital engineering services and solutions include digital automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twin technology, and machine learning.
