THE WORK
Plan methods and sequence of operations to fabricate complex precision tools, gages, fixtures and details.
Use a variety of precision equipment, measuring instruments, lathes, millers, grinder, etc., to lay out, perform and check out machining and hand operations required to work to tolerance which range from extremely close in one dimension to close in three, including numerous interrelated dimensions for holes, angles, radii, locating points, set blocks etc.
Work from drawings, tool designs, sketches, mylars, templates, sample parts, and other instructions to fabricate tools; use advanced shop mathematics including trigonometry and geometry to determine and check angles, radii, hole locations, problems of accessibility, missing dimensions, etc.
Plan details of design, line up and assemble detail parts and work out problems of alignment and accessibility.
Use optical and laser equipment and a wide variety of precision measuring instruments to align, check work and do periodic inspections.
Work with manufacturing engineering personnel to resolve problems, develop new types and methods of tooling and perform toolmakers duties on various research and development projects.
Assist higher grade tool makers on very complex work, direct, assist, and instruct one or two helpers.
Work independently on no more than four tasks as assigned by supervision or work leader.
Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level toolmakers job.
Refer questionable conditions or recurring difficulties to working leader or supervision.
Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH&S procedures.
As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.

Basic Qualifications:
- Use advanced shop mathematics including trigonometry, handbook formulas and a wide variety of precision measuring instruments such as height gage, vernier calipers, surface gage, transit, etc.

- Able to operate standard machine tools. Knowledge of lofting practices. Equivalent to 4 years high school plus 4 years trades training.
