Scope of Position

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) is committed to enhancing the quality and reliability of clinical care provided to patients. The Director develops strategic and operational plans to assure OSUWMC continues to be innovative and world renowned in its approaches to quality and quality improvement.

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President for Clinical Quality and Patient Safety, collaborates with multidisciplinary stakeholders to identify gaps in care and facilitate clinical process improvement to improve patient outcomes and enhance quality and safety. Designs and maintains quality programs and ensures compliance with regulatory and other requirements. Analyzes and identifies trends using comparative clinical data, internal and external benchmarking. Identifies, prioritizes, coordinates, and integrates clinical quality improvement initiatives and goals within the health system. Monitors effectiveness of improvement strategies and validates sustained improvement over time. May develop training programs with emphasis on improvement of outcomes and patient safety; trains and consults staff on use of quality management techniques. Utilizes a variety of continuous quality improvement tools and resources to evaluate clinical data and practice patterns to improve practices across the health system. May help facilitate peer review in accordance with hospital bylaws. Conducts national research and recommends best practices to meet annual quality management objectives in addition to proactively seeking involvement and engagement on national, regional, or local quality/patient safety committees This position will help guide the strategy necessary to establish and maintain the OSUWMC as a top tier academic medical center.

Position Summary

Directs the overall clinical performance improvement and quality management activities while ensuring standardization of practice and alignment with organizational priorities. Drives performance metrics, analyzes data trends, and coaches multidisciplinary care teams to improve performance. Evaluates current programs, leads improvement strategies, and develops action plans that optimize performance. The director will proactively lead an engagement strategy with other disciplines to ensure that information about quality performance is consistently delivered in meaningful and adaptable ways to unit leadership, dyads/triads, etc. Position will be responsible for the development and mentorship of service line leaders in addition to fostering collaborative relationships with Departments/Divisions across the OSUWMC.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:

  • Masters degree in health care administration (MHA) or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in a clinical setting with demonstrated expertise in areas of health care clinical quality and patient safety.
  • Current Certified Professional in Health Care Quality (CPHQ) or Certified Profession in Patient Safety (CPSS)
  • designation or actively seeking certification.
  • 7+ years of experience in a strategic quality position in a complex healthcare environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy and procedure manuals, and effectively present information to Associates, Executive Leadership, Committees, and the Board.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, EMR systems/databases, and navigating the Internet.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of hospital staff through C-Suite.
