Overview The New Mexico Department of Justice is seeking a dynamic and experienced litigator to join our team as the Division Director of the Government Litigation Division. The Director is responsible for overseeing a team of attorneys that handle civil litigation and administrative matters on behalf of the state. The Division focuses on defensive litigation for state agencies, administrative prosecution for state licensing boards and representing state officials in litigation and writ matters. The Director will work closely with the Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, and Deputy Attorney General for Civil Affairs on litigation strategy. Duties Oversee the operations of the Division, including the assignment of cases, directing litigation strategy, developing appropriate procedures, and providing guidance to attorneys and other disciplines. Manage a diverse group of professionals, including 8-12 attorneys and support staff. Regularly meet with clients and ensure representation meets client needs. Direct administrative prosecutions for state licensing boards and commissions. Direct defensive litigation for state agencies and issue special commissions for cases represented by attorneys outside the agency. Develop and implement training for junior-level attorneys and ensure proper mentorship is maintained throughout the division. Qualifications Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the New Mexico state bar and in good standing, or the ability to promptly acquire a limited law license. At least 6-8 years of experience in civil litigation and/or government litigation. Minimum of 3 years of management experience preferred. Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team of attorneys and legal professionals. A keen interest in training and mentoring junior attorneys. Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with government agencies, as well as a group of diverse private and public-interest stakeholders.
