Engineers perform maintenance and repair work on vessels. They will need to possess basic computer skills and also be able to communicate with coworkers/supervisors/external customers and/or contractors.

Engineers will be expected to use and follow the policies, procedures, and regulations of the CTC Responsible Carrier Program, United States Coast Guard, Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA), and Ship Inspection Report Program (SIRE). Trainee engineers are expected to use and follow all of CTC's safety policies and procedures and to have all current training in the Learning Management System (LMS) assigned to them completed by their due date. Engineers will be expected to attend the CTC annual engineering training sessions as well.

Tasks may be performed in all weather conditions, inside and outside of the vessel, and day and night. Work is performed on rotating shifts, 6 hours on/6 hours off while on a schedule of 20 days on the vessel and 10 days off.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Identify malfunctions or potential problems, then clearly report them to the Captain of the vessel.
  • Maintain and/or repair engines, electric motors, pumps, winches, and other mechanical or electrical equipment.
  • Perform general marine vessel maintenance, or repair work, such as complete oil changes, repairing leaks, finishing interiors, refueling, or maintaining decks.
  • Perform general maintenance and/or repair work on appliances (washer, dryer, hot water tanks, ice machine, stove, refrigerator, etc.) aboard the vessel.
  • Use and/or operate hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, wrench, etc.) and power tools (drill, saw, grinder, etc.) for maintenance or repair.
  • Perform and participate in emergency drills, as required.
  • Clean engine parts and keep engine rooms clean.
  • Monitor engines, machinery, and equipment indicators/gauges/alarms aboard the vessel and report abnormalities.
  • Be able to understand, interpret and use blueprints, scales, diagrams, illustrations, and operating manuals of the vessels systems, components and infrastructure.
  • Multitask efficiently
  • Monitor the availability, use, and condition of lifesaving equipment or pollution preventatives to ensure that regulations are followed.
  • Identify, maintain and repair electrical, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water, and sewage systems.
  • Start and shut down the main engines and generators of the vessel.
  • Operate or maintain on/off-loading liquid pumps or valves (fueling the vessel, taking on lube oil, etc.,).
  • Maintain complete records of engineering department activities, through the use of log books and engine room log sheets and all other associated forms (work repair requests, bilge log, monthly inspection checklist, etc.)
Minimum Educational and Job Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Physical Capabilities:
  • Lift 60-100 lbs. and traverse up to 30 feet
  • Ascend/Descend a 90-degree ladder up to 40 feet.
  • Work shift a min. of 12 hrs. (could be up to 15)
  • Position self to move through 18-inch diameter hatch.
  • Maintain constant communication with crew members.
