POSITION SUMMARY: Outpatient Pharmacy Controlled Substance and Vaccine Technician. On behalf of the pharmacy Manager-of-Record, this role is charged with the secure storage of controlled substances, ordering and stocking of controlled inventories, prescription fulfillment, and reconciliation of perpetual count of controlled drug inventories on an ongoing basis. In addition, being certified in vaccine administration, this role is also responsible for the appropriate storage of vaccines; orders, stocks, and maintains vaccine storage inventories to USP guidelines; patient vaccine administration and profile/provider documentation. Is responsible for the completion of assigned pharmacy workflow tasks with clearly defined goals for performance relating to controlled substance and vaccine administration management to ensure operational flow of services provided are executed in a compliant, safe, and efficient manner. This role supports pharmacy services provided to patients and providers within the aforementioned scope, which shall include prescription processing, patient/provider outreach, addressing incoming pharmacy calls, other tasks as assigned, and will regularly provide updates on productivity and task completion. This position will work under the supervision of the pharmacy Manager-of-Record, pharmacists, and the pharmacy technician supervisor to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient-focused pharmacy services. This position operates at the highest outpatient technician competency level working with a high degree of autonomy while also being a part of a collaborative team supporting the needs of the pharmacy. This position requires exceptional communication, coupled with the utmost in organization and efficiency acumen, with strong skills in multiple pharmacy competency areas including vaccine administration certification, controlled substances, team training support, automation ownership, and outstanding customer service, in order to maximize patient safety and experience. Position: Outpatient Pharmacy Advance Practice Technician III- On Site Department: Retail Pharmacy Schedule: Full Time ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES: Operations Under the direct supervision of the MOR, pharmacist, and pharmacy technician supervisor, provides immunizations within one year of hire to patients under the supervision of a pharmacist and as allowed by the Board of Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, Centers of Disease Control, and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice by obtaining and maintaining training and certification, appropriately screening and administering vaccinations, and properly utilizing the Massachusetts Immunization Information reporting system. Responsible for all aspects of Schedule II through V Controlled Substance fulfillment, weekly detailed physical inventory and reconciliation, perpetual inventory record-keeping, appropriate state-required Prescription Monitoring Program utilization, and general maintenance, storage, and security of all controlled substance medications as assigned. Supports the department in the ethical practice of pharmacy on a daily basis by providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services. Exemplifies the creation and maintenance of a healthy work environment. A healthy work environment is one where each member of the team feels supported and held accountable for their actions based on clearly defined standards and expectations. Pharmacy technician III may review, transcribe, and enter a valid prescription order from an authorized provider into the pharmacy system ensuring accuracy of transcription. Pharmacy technician III, after identifying him/herself as such, may request refill authorizations from the prescriber or prescriber's agent and, with the approval of the pharmacist on duty, receive new or omitted prescription information from the prescriber or agent, except where otherwise prohibited by federal or state law and regulations. Pharmacy technician III may, with the approval of the pharmacist on duty, perform prescription transfers between pharmacies or pharmacy departments for prescriptions issued for controlled substances only in Schedule VI. Processes prescription orders in a timely manner; retrieves, counts, measures, and prepares medications, solutions, ointments, and other compounds as directed. Ensures all work is checked by a pharmacist. Encompasses all responsibilities and expectations of a Technician I and a Technician II including prescription processing, claim adjudication and error resolution, fulfillment, and exceptional patient service. Supports the service needs of the pharmacist relative to pharmacy services and maximized patient care outcomes. These needs include but are not limited to communication with providers on behalf of the pharmacist; assisting the pharmacist with all third party transactions; online adjudication resolution; expedition of discharge and delivery of transplant and various high-risk patient prescriptions. Conducts interpersonal communications and assistance with patients, visitors, physicians, and fellow team members in a courteous and friendly manner. Supports other staff with challenging patient interactions prior to referring patients and visitors to pharmacist or manager on matters requiring their attention. Greets customers and provide a positive customer service experience and service recovery conflict resolution when appropriate; assist customers with their questions, problems, and complaints in person and via the phone in a professional manner; obtains information for new prescriptions, while maintaining customer / patient confidentiality. For prescriptions related inquiries offer a pharmacist consult. Refer all clinician and customer clinical questions to a pharmacist as appropriate. Communicates to pharmacists and/or pharmacy manager on the maintenance and malfunctioning of equipment and unsafe working conditions. Performs the packaging and shipping preparation steps of mailing prescriptions to patients with accuracy. High-level functioning individual with an ability to perform assigned and ad hoc tasks independently including but not limited to: Resolution and follow-up on various daily reporting Assigned patient management outreach projects Floating workflow support when necessary In pharmacy training and support of newly hired pharmacists and technicians Maintains and advances professional and specialized competency, including: National Technician certification. Assumes responsibility for participating in experiences necessary to ensure appropriate skill development and training. Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of developments in the field through continuing education, reviewing pertinent literature and/or by attending professional meetings. Attends and participates in hospital and other management training and development workshops. Oversees management of site automation units by removing and adding medications assigned to the unit, completes daily and monthly required maintenance, and is the first-line responder to resolve basic malfunctions to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. Maintains excellent familiarity with appropriate department policies and procedures and exemplifies stellar role modeling for the team relative to: Changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, floating, adjusting assignments, etc. Maintains all designated medical information confidential as per established protocols. Maintains work environment in a clean and orderly fashion. Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision-making and to support the department and the mission and goals. Follows established infection control and safety procedures. OTHER DUTIES: Possesses competency to train/mentor other technician team members and become involved in staff development and skill development support. Possesses competency and willingness to participate in special projects and tasks as assigned/appropriate by management. Possesses competency and a willingness to participate within the departmental interview process for Tech I or Tech II positions. Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards. JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent required. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: Must be currently registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the Board of Pharmacy in Massachusetts. Must have current active National Certification (CPhT) verified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the National Healthcareer Association. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) in applicable areas preferred. EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 4 years progressively responsible experience in a pharmacy setting. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Work requires effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with hospital staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, colleagues, and others. Ability to speak the English language, read, interpret, and follow complicated verbal and written instruction with precision, accuracy, and dependability. Additional language skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served are very helpful. Ability to multi-task, prioritize essential tasks and meet deadlines. Strong math skills required, ability to perform work accurately and pay attention to details, including being able to perform general mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios & proportions). Basic computer proficiency inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information. Knowledge of Microsoft Access and Excel.
