General Description

This is public contact work responsible for assisting walk-in, email and telephone customers with items related to City utility services. Utilizes the accounting system to record payment transactions as collected. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Utility Billing Manager.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Primary Duties

  • Assists customers via walk-in, phone or email. Resolves inquiries and complaints pertaining to utility accounts and bills. Researches and analyzes historical billing and usage data when applicable. Contacts customers/owners about delinquent accounts and online payment processing errors when applicable (or when directed).
  • Processes cash, check, and credit card payments in the accounting system, scans mailed payments, balances the cash drawer and deposits cash daily.
  • Posts collected funds in a timely manner; balances deposits and creates and saves deposit reports.
  • Processes utility services requests for both new and terminated services, gathering all the required paperwork for each transaction. Retrieves utility meter readings for specific service orders and relays results to the customer.
  • Generates work orders at utility customers' request to verify readings, leaks, etc. coordinating with other departments as needed. Completes any follow up documentation needed based on the work order results and customer requests.
  • Updates customer account information including address changes based on customer interactions and from returned mail.
  • Assists with gathering documents for public records requests and annual records retention/destruction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of customer service and cash handling experience required.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License.
In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.
