Hastings Insurance is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Specialist to join our Compliance and Audit team This is a great opportunity for an experienced legal professional with exceptional communication abilities to provide insight and support in coordinating our complex regulatory compliance needs.

Position Overview

The Regulatory Compliance Specialist coordinates and assists with the development, implementation, and monitoring of a comprehensive program to enhance and review the Company's systematic compliance with legal, regulatory, and market conduct requirements to improve and preserve the Company's financial and operational stability, profitability, efficiency and commitment to accuracy and fairness. The position provides compliance support to various departments and disseminates information and analysis regarding the development of compliance laws and regulations.

Position Location & Work Format

This position is flexible in its location We will entertain candidates who reside within our six-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, or Illinois) to work a remote schedule. Candidates residing within the greater Hastings, Michigan area will work a hybrid (combination of on-site and work-from-home) schedule as an alternative.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and assists in the development, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive regulatory compliance program designed to:
    • Reduce the Company's exposure to systematic legal, regulatory, and market conduct compliance violations.
    • Establish and strengthen relations between the Company and regulatory officials.
    • Improve managerial and board oversight of operations.
    • Reduce technical and processing errors, unintended coverages, and policyholder complaints.
    • Improve speed to market and timeliness and accuracy of claims settlement.
    • Identify, communicate, and coordinate compliance with regulatory developments in all coverage states.
  • Conducts periodic internal reviews, using appropriate research and statistical methodology of operational functions, including:
    • Rate and form filing use.
    • Product advertising.
    • Claim settlement practices.
    • Underwriting and policy termination.
    • Document retention and disposition.
    • Policyholder and employee privacy.
    • Underwriting practices.
  • Develops, implements, and verifies all corrective action plans resulting from the compliance review process.
  • Coordinates Company responses to market conduct examinations, storm moratoria, data calls, department complaints, and other regulatory inquiries.
  • Coordinates periodic reports and recommendations to senior management.
  • Serves occasionally as formal project manager on significant corporate projects and initiatives.
  • Actively participates in professional development, i.e., continuing education or self-improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Insurance education and designations such as AINS, CPCU preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with:
    • Insurance regulations, including those related to underwriting, rate and form filing, claims settlement, and marketing.
    • Claims, underwriting, and administrative operations and processes.
    • Statistical review and measurement.
  • Proficiency in effective interpersonal skills, communication, and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated formal project management skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated PC skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
