Position Summary:

The Admitting Representative is responsible for conducting interviews with patients representing the medical center's admission and financial policies; obtaining demographic and third-party payer information necessary for admission and billing of patient accounts; compiling, verifying, analyzing, and distributing demographic, insurance, and financial information to assure proper compliance and prompt service to patients; ensuring verified data will provide accurate billing of charges and timely collection of accounts; and supporting hospital and departmental goals in a manner that enhances the successful operation of the hospital and creates a positive image to the public.

This Admitting Representative position is in the Main Admitting section of the Admitting Department at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center/Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach.

Essential Job Outcomes and Functions:

Attendance/Punctuality/Professionalism:

Required to have punctual attendance for assigned workdays and times; come to work on time, work their shift as scheduled, and leave at the scheduled time; effectively meet deadlines and needs of the organization; be flexible and capable of performing work assigned in other departments as needed; engage in a professional manner with all patients, co-workers, other departments, and the general public; complete an assigned workload in a timely manner; and perform additional related job duties as needed.

Communication - Verbal/Electronic/Written:

Required to obtain accurate and current patient demographic and financial information using proper grammar and verbal skills to establish a valid medical record and patient billing account.

Records and Documentation/Data Entry:

Required to complete and document the hospital's Condition of Admission form and advise patients of other related forms to ensure compliance with Joint Commission regulations; enter patient information accurately and efficiently when creating the electronic medical record and billing account; scan all admission-related documents.

Liaison/Reception/Customer Service/Patient Escort:

Required to act as a liaison between the hospital and patients, family, and visitors; direct patients and visitors appropriately; greet visitors in person to address their needs; facilitate and answer telephone calls to provide or solicit relevant information; filter and assess needs of patients or representatives; provide information and attempt to resolve requests and complaints while maintaining a calm, professional appearance.

Eligibility Verification Duties:

Required to inform patients of insurance co-payments, deductibles, or deposits; financially screen patients to ensure eligibility is identified and appropriate authorization is obtained; gather necessary billing information.

Attendance of Meetings/Professional Development:

Required to attend hospital staff meetings as assigned and required; attend scheduled in-service and mandatory in-service; attend any other job-related meetings and trainings.

Cash Handling/Register Duties:

Required to collect co-payments, deductibles, and deposits; follow established cash handling procedures; perform all related cash handling duties.

Hospitalization Intake Duties:

Required to coordinate with appropriate clinical staff and accurately obtain all appropriate patient data elements to facilitate the bed request.

Requirements:

Qualifications/Work Experience:

1+ years previous experience in a hospital or Patient Financial Services experience.

Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology.

Excellent organizational skills.

Strong keyboarding skills required.

Must type 30 words per minute.

Excellent communication skills required.

Excellent customer service skills required.

Must be able to multi-task.

Must be able to work all shifts.

Education:

High School Degree
