Job Summary: The Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and execution of core mechanical systems architecture and components. This individual must have a strong knowledge of energy storage systems for electrical grid and commercial applications, the mechanical engineering discipline, and the processes required to lead a complex design to an on-time product launch. Responsibilities: Generate and present wide-ranging concepts to meet customer and business needs using brainstorming, sketches, mockups, and other techniques. Develop new product designs from prototype to production considering application, cost, weight, performance, thermodynamics, reliability, manufacturing, assembly, and field serviceability. Design new products and components including plastic injection molded parts, die castings, sheet metal, weldments stampings, machined components, HVAC piping, and similar. Verifies control plans and validation plans to ensure proper implementation. Work collaboratively with manufacturing to ensure designs can be manufactured efficiently. Support validation in identifying root cause and corrective action for field and validation test failures. Support prototype builds by ensuring parts are on time and issues are resolved in a timely manner. Proactively monitor the system's cost and schedule, identifying potential triggers for overspending and delays, and implementing corrective strategies. Research new technology options and recommend improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency, or costs. Participate in and supports modeling of thermal systems. Furthers the teams’ capabilities specific to HVAC, Cooling, and Fluid systems. Create and manage Solidworks CAD models, drawings, and assemblies. Perform mechanical system analyses such as Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) and Worst-case analysis (WCA). Evaluate supplier specifications & validation data to ensure selection of the proper suppliers. Adheres to all company policies, processes, and procedures. Adheres to federal and state regulations. Performs other duties as requested, directed, or assigned. Predictable and reliable attendance. Position Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent degree. Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in large-scale power systems or similar mechanical systems; packaging, modeling, thermal, HVAC, and overall large-scale system design. Deep mechanical aptitude is required including a broad knowledge of engineering materials, mechanical properties, and an understanding of the manufacturing processes associated with these materials. Proven knowledge of 3D CAD, SolidWorks, PDM, and similar systems. Strong experience in Finite element analysis (FEA) for stress and structural analysis. Experience in a fast-paced startup preferred. Experience in seismic requirements and electrical safety for Grid utility applications to meet IEEE and obtain seismic certifications. Experience in designing products intended for harsh outdoor environments complying with NEMA / IP ratings & certification. Proficient in data processing and statistical analysis. Effective communicator, capable of concisely presenting highly technical test data to internal and external customers, as well as effectively communicating with suppliers. Familiar with cradle-to-grave product design processes. Self-motivated problem-solver who pays attention to detail. Abides by safety standards and protocols. Experience with high-voltage lithium-ion battery systems including Energy Storage industry test certifications preferred. Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 10%.
