The Manager, Communications is responsible for planning, developing, and executing communications that support the people who are advancing Salk's overarching mission to better humanity through high-impact research.

The professional in this role is primarily focused on internal communications-working directly with various stakeholders to develop and disseminate multimedia content to the Salk community (employees, scientists, faculty, and the Board of Trustees)-but also contributes to external communications such as Inside Salk magazine, press releases, social media, and donor communications.

The individual must be an excellent writer and editor first and foremost, but also someone who is comfortable managing digital communications tools such as email clients and web content management systems. They ensure that communications are accurate, professional, and conform to Salk style and branding.

The individual must have outstanding attention to detail and be a forward-looking, strategic self-starter with sound judgment and the ability to meet competing demands and priorities of stakeholder groups, often under tight deadlines.

The Manager, Communications works closely with other members of the External Relations Department, including the Senior Director, Communications, and experts in graphic design, photography, videography, digital communications, and fundraising. The individual may supervise one or more team members and collaborates frequently with other departments and individuals at Salk.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Content Development and Distribution

  • Acts as liaison between the Communications team and other departments, such as HR, DEI, Benefits, IT, affinity groups, and others.
  • Recommends communications support for programs and initiatives.
  • Gathers and assists in developing content, identifying the appropriate sender and/or platform, etc. to enable timely distribution of relevant information across appropriate channels.
    Initiates and drives communication and content development throughout all stages of the process, including facilitating content review, approval, and delivery.
  • Writes and edits news items, special features, emails, Q&A profiles, social media posts, event materials, proposals, reports, and other pieces for a variety of communications platforms while employing a consistent voice, tone, and style of communication and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Manages digital communications tools such as email clients (e.g., Constant Contact) and content management systems (e.g., Wordpress), with support from other team members.
  • Evaluates communications and suggests adjustments to content and delivery, considering efficacy and best practices.
Project Management and Administration
  • Establishes best practices and standard operating procedures for communications channels.
  • Tracks digital metrics of emails and websites to measure engagement with content.
  • Uses appropriate calendaring and project management tools to coordinate deadlines for development, editing, approval, and distribution of content.
  • Attends weekly Communications department meetings. Meets regularly with the Senior Director, Communications and Senior Director, Graphic & Digital Communications, and regularly/as needed with other members of the Communications team to ensure collaboration and coordination.
  • Identifies professional development opportunities that would provide knowledge and skill to enrich the communications function.
    Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • May directly supervise one or more employees within the Communications department, supervising their daily activities and being ultimately accountable for their work product. Backs up the position(s) operationally when needed.
  • Develops and maintains a climate supportive of skill and knowledge enhancement; communicates career development opportunities to staff.
  • Trains and assigns work to new and continuing employees. Provides guidance on performance standards and Institute policies and procedures. Conducts performance evaluations.
    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
    Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
What we Require
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or other academic background, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of five years of experience working in communications, general communications public relations, or related field.
  • Experience supporting the development of communications for executive leadership and strategic initiatives.
  • Experience developing and distributing digital content, including authoring, editing, and proofreading communications.
  • Prior work experience in a larger (500+) organization is preferred.
  • Demonstrated mastery of the English language and strong communication skills, including composition (spelling and grammar), editing, and proofreading. Skilled in drafting and editing correspondence, articles, and other copy using AP and Chicago Manual of Style writing standards.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with ability to independently balance strategic priorities and tactical work to meet deadlines and ensure smooth workflow.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate and interact in a positive, diplomatic and effective manner with a diverse clientele, using a high degree of tact, diplomacy, and discretion, with emphasis on flexibility and professionalism.
  • Ability to bring creativity and innovation to and enhance visibility of communication efforts.
  • Ability to ensure confidentiality of information and sensitive documents by following operational procedures and exercising judgment in responding to requests.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of project management software programs (e.g., Asana), email clients (e.g., Constant Contact), and content management systems (e.g., Wordpress). Willingness to learn new digital tools and content management systems.
  • May be required to work an adjusted schedule to support events.

What We Can Offer

The expected pay range for this position is $82,000 to $107,250 annually.Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
