What is this role?

In the role of Mechanical Engineer you will develop and scale-up new consumer products along with enhancing and improving existing products. An understanding of OnShape (or Solidworks), verification methods, and various manufacturing methods are crucial. Much of this work will draw on your understanding of fluidics, plastic part design, manufacturing, and validation methods. This is a hands-on role. You get to build, test, and watch the things you worked on roll off the assembly line. We are a small team; the ability to value input, have a strong commitment to the details, and contribute to the group is important.

What does an average day look like?
  • Driving Results: Develop and Scale-up Consumer Products: Work with the team or independently to create robust CAD models. Develop proof-of-concept designs and experiments to test theories and concepts. Execute improvements based on experimental, team and consumer feedback. Diagnose root cause analysis and implement solutions in real time at partner vendors. Transition products from design to prototype to pilot and mass manufacturing.
  • Taking Ownership: Lab Studies: In a hands-on environment, build and test prototypes to collect meaningful data. Troubleshoot root causes of manufacturing and assembly issues. Develop novel test methods, improve current methods, and come up with new test fixtures. Use engineering statistics and tolerance analysis to diagnose problems and propose solutions. Implement and document corrective actions and long-term solutions. Testing may range from fluidics to product function (forces required to assemble/function etc.), product durability, and dimensional stability. Documentation: Create and contribute to high level product documentation (product requirements, performance specifications, manufacturing specification, assembly SOPs, etc.). Verify and track that released product is meeting requirements. Initiate SOPs, specifications, change orders, and other documents.
  • Making Decisions: Design for Manufacturing: Design products that can be made cost effectively using a variety of methods. Manufacturing methods may include injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, die casting, stamping, machining, and automated assembly. Create robust drawings that call out critical dimensions and tolerances and communicate clearly.
  • Cultivating Relationships: Communication: Communicate clearly (written and verbal) to overseas manufacturers for both product release and trouble-shooting problems. Communicate ideas (visual, written, verbal) to both the engineering team and other team members. Take and receive constructive feedback. Collaborate with both engineers and non-engineers.
  • Instilling Trust: Creative solutions: Contribute to brainstorming while supporting and building off others' ideas. Come up with novel approaches to technical problems.Customer Focus: Manufacturing Support: Develop various fixtures for in house assembly. Support continuous improvement initiatives. Provide support for critical supplier issues. Assist with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
