City of Lynchburg Water Resources Department is seeking a Water Meter Mechanic Ii to perform difficult technical work in the testing, repair, calibration, maintenance and installation of water meters, automated meter reading equipment, pressure reducing valves and altitude valves. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Meter Supervisor.
This position is part of a skilled progression plan that has 3 levels.

Essential Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
* Assists in the testing, calibration, maintenance of water meters. Disassembles water meters, replaces, repairs and rebuilds defective parts and reassembles meters in the field and repair shop, and approves meters for return to service;
* Removes and replaces 5/8"-2" meters with minimal supervision in the field to ensure system accuracy;
* Assists in removal and replacement of 3"-10" meters;
* Prepares and maintains records of meter testing, meter changes and meter repairs in the appropriate databases;
* Makes minor repairs and modifications to meter boxes and meter vaults;
* Monitors, enters and works in confined spaces;
* Installs and removes fire hydrant meters and forwards consumption data to the Billings and Collections Division;
* Maintains water meter and repair parts inventory;
* Assists in investigating abnormal readings on large water meters;
* Assists in installing, programming and maintaining automated meter reading equipment;
* Maintains assigned equipment;
* Investigates and records accurate and detailed information concerning meters needing to be repaired or replaced;
* Contacts customers to schedule times for meter replacements or repairs;
* Utilizes computer systems to view billing information, cellular software, and other programs that tracks necessary data;
* Utilizes computer and tablet software to complete work orders and log data;
* Operates hand, power and gas tools;
* Interprets written and oral instructions;
* Communicates effectively and courteously with customers, peers, and others;
* Works in the City's snow removal operation;
* Responds to emergency calls;
* Performs disconnects for non payment and delinquent accounts;
* Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, as necessary to accommodate customers schedule;
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following
* Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned;
* When unusual situations occur and /or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
* Assist with Meter Operations work orders as required;
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of water meters; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
* Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record based on City criteria;
* Must process or obtain certified training in the maintenance of Pressure Reducing Valve's and other control valves;
* Ability to obtain certifications necessary for specific work unit such as, flagger certificate, forklift license, first aid and CPR certification;
* Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License Class A within 12-18 months;
* Relevant background checks must be completed and approved;
* Must successfully complete 15100 and 15700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment;
* May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position;
