Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager, performs day-to-day routine technical support services and functions for District computers , networks, and devices; performs moderately complex problem resolution and technical support to Information Technology (IT) end users related to the operation and use of personal computer (PC) and peripheral equipment, local and wide area networks, internet, and intranet services as well as a variety of routine server and software program and application platform connections.

Representative Duties

Installs, assembles, operates, tests and coordinates the maintenance and repair of routine less complex data communications hardware including but not limited to network hubs, personal computers, switches and diagnostic test equipment. E

Troubleshoots, diagnoses, resolves, and documents first-level hardware, software, and peripheral technical issues; assists end users with technical issues; escalates more complex issues to Lead staff or management, as needed. E

Reviews, sets up, and performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs; schedules maintenance for campus computers, printers, and related equipment; follows up and facilitates more complex repairs with vendors or internal IT staff; notifies appropriate staff and management, as needed. E

Assists with the maintenance of PCs, Mac computers, and the District's network and server environment. E

Performs routine set up and installation of PC hardware, software, operating systems, and peripheral equipment; troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves software and/or hardware malfunctions within their level of expertise. E

Assists IT staff with technology moves including but not limited to computers and peripheral equipment as needed for District staff. E

Installs, operates, and maintains telephone communications equipment. E

Partners with other department staff during the installation and implementation of new computers, printers, and peripheral equipment including but not limited to cables and connectors, the installation of servers and related communication equipment. E

Maintains network systems and servers; installs and configures network software and interfaces at workstation level; maintains network security; configures internet browser and email software; assigns and maintains email accounts and webpages for District departments. E

Installs, tests, updates, and deploys images for computer lab and PCs throughout the District. E

Troubleshoots telephone switch problems, modifying phone system's database, initiate adds and changes to telephone system, installs telephone instruments, and interfaces with telephone system vendors to evaluate and fix problems. E

Maintains contact with vendors and distributors to keep abreast of equipment upgrades, new computers and related equipment. E

Recommends, controls, and monitors off-campus vendor repair activity for computers, printers, and related equipment when off-campus repairs are required E

Maintains parts and hardware location inventory; maintains computer and printer spare parts inventory and makes recommendations on the type and number of parts to be purchased to maintain a minimum inventory. E..

Provides recommendations on the purchase of hardware, software, and peripherals; assists with obtaining quotes for services and/or products; prepares requisitions for equipment as directed. E

Ensures compliance with technical standards and software copyright laws E3

Assists in preparing, updating, and maintaining a variety of department and/or technical documentation including but not limited to records, logs, and reports related to department procedures, repairs, and maintenance of computer software, hardware, and peripherals. E

Assists other departments in determining their technology needs. E

Trains and assists the instructional assistants when assigned to college computer labs. E

Attends training classes, seminars, and workshops on new computer technology as required. E

Performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties in support of the department's day-to-day activities and/or operations including but not limited to greets and directs visitors, answers phone calls, responds to callers, and directs incoming phone calls; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion or requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance standard office equipment. E

Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, trainings, seminars, and professional development opportunities as requested. E

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: • District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment. • California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment. • Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). • College policies and procedures related to the area of assignment. • General methods and procedures of operating computers and related peripheral equipment. • Principles and practices of electronics related to computer hardware and peripherals. • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to the use of computer hardware and software • Current computer hardware, software, and related peripheral equipment. • Operating system architecture, commands, and components applicable to District computer platforms. • Desktop computers, including hardware and software installation, operation and maintenance. • Methods, principles, practices, and techniques for troubleshooting and determining the causes of system, computer, and PC hardware problems and device errors and failures. • Computer networking system and software applications. • Public contracts and legal terminology associated with purchasing and approval processes in higher education or public sector environment. • Voice and/or data technology and telephone equipment communications. • Electronic theory and circuit analysis skills. • Operations in the Microsoft Windows/Office, MAC, and Cloud environments. • Advanced diagnostics and utilities software. • Computer related communication equipment such as printer interfaces and switches. • PC and Mac computer configuration principles and a wide variety of desktop personal printers. • Principles, practices, and techniques of training and providing technical assistance and instruction to end users. • Repair tools, materials, and electronic testing equipment used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair, and maintenance of computer and related equipment. • Cloud-based management tools and end point device management. • Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment. • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility. • Record-keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing system methods and techniques. • Best practices and procedures on use of various office equipment. • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. • Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

Education and Experience

High school graduation or General Educational Development (GED); AND • Some college-level coursework in computer science, information systems, or related discipline. • Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience providing technical support in an information systems environment; installing and maintaining computer software and hardware in a network environment. • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position

License Certificates/Credentials

Desired Qualifications

Distinguishable Characteristics

The Information Technology (IT) Specialist II is the journey-level technical classification within the Information Technology Specialist series. The incumbent performs routine to moderately advanced services to information technology end users; assists end users in the effective use of computer hardware, standard software, peripheral equipment, devices, and other technology tools to meet the District's operating and business requirements. The IT Specialist II diagnoses, troubleshoots, and resolves problems within the incumbent's level of expertise.

The IT Specialist II is distinguished from the Lead Information Technology (IT) Specialist in that the latter is the senior, lead classification within the IT Specialist series. The incumbent performs complex installation, configuration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of hardware, software, servers, networks, and operating systems requiring more technical experience and knowledge of the District's information technology infrastructure and operating environment. The Lead IT Specialist exercises a high-degree of independent judgement, specialized knowledge, and experience in executing the assigned responsibilities of the position
