Overview:

A coastal ecosystem observation network with nodes on Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie, has been developed consisting of the Real-time Coastal Observation Network (ReCON), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), autonomous surface vehicles (ASV) and crewed and uncrewed air systems (UAS) to provide continuous observations of chemical, biological, and physical environmental parameters. The system currently supports projects addressing harmful algal bloom (HAB) detection, human health observations related to beach closures and drinking water processing concerns, fish and zooplankton bioacoustics, rip current warnings, spill response, ice observations, ecosystem fire impact, and long-term ecosystem research.

This position is for an engineer, specializing in Autonomous Vehicle Engineering to work in GLERLs Observing Systems and Advanced Technology (OSAT) branch.

Responsibilities:

On a continuing basis participate in observing system support for vessel towed instrumentation repair and upgrade, remote data acquisition, network support, and real-time data management.

Work with the ReCON observing system team on engineering systems development projects.

Supports existing real-time observing system software and hardware deployments.

Creates and maintains data retrieval and data management software systems products for real-time observation nodes.

Interfacing sensors and devices to embedded processors via digital and analog ports. Designing interface circuits to provide system control and switched power.

Perform sensor and system installation, integration, and repair in a real-time environmental observation network.

Operation of Material Handling Equipment (i.e., forklift, overhead crane, etc.) is required.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a Bachelors degree in electrical or electronics engineering.

Ability to lift and carry a 50lb load is required.

Have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a technical team, think critically, and strong interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated expertise working on in situ observing systems in aquatic environments.

Demonstrated expertise in designing, building, and programming legacy and cutting-edge marine instrumentation.

High level expertise with programming languages such as assembly language, C, C++, and CRBasic; programming in a network-based Linux environment scheduling Bash scripts

in Linux.

High level expertise with serial and Ethernet communications using xterm, ssh, scp, ftp, telnet, or other protocols.

Starting Pay:
USD $47.00/Hr.
