Communications Manager
The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) seeks a communications manager with one to three years’ previous professional experience in media relations and public policy to work with ITIF’s policy analysts and communications team to increase ITIF’s exposure in the press, expand its social media presence, and enhance its reputation as the world’s top think tank for science and technology policy.
Reporting to ITIF’s chief communications officer and managing editor, this position is based in Washington, D.C., with a hybrid schedule allowing employees to work onsite in ITIF’s headquarters part of the time and remotely part of the time.
The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in technology and innovation issues and may have gained their previous media relations experience in journalism, government, or an organization such as a public policy think tank, industry trade association, advocacy group, public relations or public affairs agency.
About ITIF
ITIF has earned its standing as the world’s leading think tank for technology and innovation policy by nimbly producing high-caliber research reports, policy analysis, and commentary, and by staging a rich program of panel discussions and other events, which it hosts in its Washington, D.C. office and other locations. The communications manager’s primary responsibility is to help disseminate and publicize all this activity. This is an exciting opportunity for a rising media-relations and strategic-communications professional to deepen their expertise in public policy, public affairs, and government while helping to influence public debates on important technology-related issues.
Duties
Partner with ITIF’s communications team and policy analysts to execute a communications program that enhances our reputation as a thought leader among U.S. and international policymakers through proactive and reactive media outreach, digital media, webinars and events, and direct engagement.
Drive media coverage by publicizing research reports, placing op-eds, monitoring the news, cultivating relationships with reporters, and continually curating and updating ITIF’s press lists.
Draft and schedule social media posts for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other emerging platforms.
Assist the communications team in promoting and executing public events and webinars.
Partner with ITIF’s design and digital media manager to conceive collateral materials and commentary pieces and other content on the website.
Track media coverage and other communications performance metrics and provide regular reports for staff and ITIF’s board.
Copyedit and proofread ITIF’s communications materials.
Qualifications
Minimum of two years’ direct experience with demonstrated success planning and executing communications tasks.
Previous experience conducting or assisting with media relations, including hands-on experience with media-engagement platforms such as Cision, Meltwater, and/or Critical Mention.
Outstanding writing and copyediting skills.
Strong familiarity with public policy and government, and keen interest in issues related to technology and innovation.
Understanding of digital communications, including the fundamentals of website content management.
Practical experience and sound judgment using social media to raise the profile of an organization and engage in public issues.
A personable and collaborative team player with exceptional organizational habits and a proven ability to handle multiple projects at once.
Visual storytelling experience, such as producing video animations, would be a plus.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is $60,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience. ITIF offers a health benefits package, generous paid vacation, an annual performance-based bonus, and a public transportation benefit.
Application Process
Please submit a resume and cover letter explaining why you are interested in joining ITIF and how your experience and qualifications align with the goal of enhancing ITIF’s reputation through an ongoing strategic communications program.
