Position Summary To proficiently perform and document routine and advanced professional duties in the preparation and dispensing of investigational medications, maintenance of appropriate documentation and provisions of clinical trial drug information.Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.Other duties may be assigned.Supervise other research pharmacist(s) and technician(s)Review study protocols for which the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) will provide services.Compile information sheets for use by the George Washington University Hospital Pharmacy (GWUHP) department and IDS staff.Dispense and compound investigational drugs according to protocol; prepare unit doses and intravenous admixtures under sterile environment.Demonstrate an understanding of and complies with regulations, policies and procedures established by local and federal government and the pharmacy department.Maintain drug accountability records and any other documentation for each study and each investigational medication handled by the IDS.Ensure that proper security is maintained in the IDS office.Demonstrate advanced pharmacist competencies in interacting and communicating with other health care professionals and patients.Demonstrate a commitment to the quality of care in a clinical trial setting, including maintenance of confidentiality.Demonstrate effectiveness in educating and orienting self to the George Washington University Hospital Pharmacy (GWUHP) Department.Apply problem identification and resolution skills and solid therapeutic knowledge to those studies requiring pharmacist participation.Demonstrate effectiveness in day-to-day functional supervision.Works harmoniously with coworkers.Document daily activities and responsibilities.Compile invoices for services provided.Inventory all investigational drug supplies on a monthly basis.Provide in-services for GWU hospital staff as needed for new in-patient protocols.Available to address concerns and answers questions related to any study handled by the IDS.Place, receive, and resolve discrepancies of drug shipments from the sponsor or sponsor's representative.Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of continuous quality improvement.Serve as a member of the GWU Institutional Review Board and Serious Adverse Events Sub-Committee.Demonstrate knowledge of and complies with FDA and JCAHO standards for clinical trials involving human subjects.Demonstrate knowledge of and complies with the Association of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) guidelines on Clinical Drug Research.Assist with occasional coverage of the oncology pharmacy.Performs other work-related duties as assigned Minimum QualificationsThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.EducationA Doctor of Pharmacy Degree is necessary with a clinical or research emphasis is preferred.Completion of an ASHP accredited residency is desirable.LicensureCurrent licensure as a Registered Pharmacist by the District of Columbia or eligibility for D.C. licensure through reciprocity or board examination, is necessary. License must be obtained within 3 months of employment.ExperienceClinical research experience is desirable.CompetenciesMust have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the MFA. Ability to do math calculations, input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested.Supervision ReceivedSupervision is received from the Executive Director of Pharmacy Services.Supervision ExercisedFunctional supervision is exercised over research technical staff.Typical Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
