Watertown, United States Boston Dynamics Full time

As a Sustaining Electrical Engineer on the Spot team, you will support the electronics for all fielded versions of Boston Dynamics' quadruped mobile robots. You will be responsible for electrical bug triage, troubleshooting, and resolution. Additionally, you will support the operations team by resolving component obsolescence issues, qualifying production first articles, and resolving supplier DFM feedback. You'll love working on a fun, collaborative, and highly capable team to support one of the world's coolest robots.

Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. For years, our awe-inspiring viral videos on YouTube have shown the world what remarkably capable robots can do. Now we are quickly becoming a recognized leader in automation solutions for industrial applications and warehouse logistics.

How you will make an impact:

  • Develop (document, design, test, support) short- and long-term solutions to product design defects including circuit re-design, component changes, and identifying SW workarounds
  • Collaborate across the engineering, manufacturing, production, and test teams to triage, troubleshoot, and diagnose robot failures to root cause
  • Qualify production supplier changes by developing and executing Production Validation Test (PVT) plans, resolving Design For Manufacturing (DFM) feedback, collaborating with suppliers, and updating technical documentation
  • Author technical documentation such as test plans and reports, rework instructions, schematics, layout, and BOMs
  • Collaborate with supply chain to resolve component obsolescence issues
  • Document and present findings to the greater engineering team
  • Develop non-production test and debugging infrastructure (test boards, cables, software, tools, etc.)
  • Create Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Participate in design reviews
  • Identify design, process, and production test improvement opportunities to drive down design errors and production defect rates
We are looking for:
  • BS in electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, or closely related field
  • 2+ years of directly related work experience
  • Passion for sustaining electronics in the production lifecycle phase
  • Demonstrated ability to debug to root cause electrical issues
  • Embedded computing and/or robotics systems knowledge
  • Electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout software (e.g. Altium)
  • Familiarity with common PLM software (e.g. Arena)
  • Basic Linux skills
  • Detail oriented, methodical, and creative problem solver
Nice to have:
  • Software development in C/C++, Python, Verilog/VHDL, and/or LabView
  • Familiarity with Jira for bug tracking
  • Familiarity with formal problem solving techniques such as 5 Whys, 8D, etc.
