The City of Davis is looking for a Safe Routes to School Coordinator to join our Transportation Engineering Department and support local efforts to promote active transportation and other forms of alternative commuting programs with our local schools The Safe Routes to School Coordinator is a 75% Community Services Program Coordinator who is assigned to special programs within our Public Works Engineering and Transportation Department. As the Safe Routes to School Coordinator, you will work with local schools, city staff, parent volunteers, and community members to encourage and educate all grade levels on subjects related to biking and transportation. This position plans and oversees several large-scale events each year. These events include the bike, walk, and roll to school days in October and May, and Loopalooza in May. This position also supports bike swaps and bike valets and at various community events. There are opportunities to write and manage grants related to the implementation of new and innovative programs. This position collaborates with the Active Transportation Coordinator and reports to the Senior Transportation Planner. This position will also work with the City Traffic Engineer to collect traffic data around school sites. At least once a year this position presents a summary of their work to the City of Davis Transportation Commission. Additional tasks assigned to this position may include: Overseeing Active4.me, the bike scanning program Coordinating, managing, and leading bike rodeos at all elementary schools Developing and leading on-street bike education and mechanic training at junior high schools and high schools. The ideal candidate will have experience with organizing events, as well as experience teaching subjects such as bike education and bike mechanics. We are looking for someone who can effectively teach at a range of grade levels. This position requires a motivated self-starter with excellent communication and leadership skills, and someone who is committed to bringing encouragement, enjoyment, and education to our school-aged community. DEFINITION Under direction, assists in planning, organizing, coordinating and promoting one or more community services programs and/or facilities; programs may include, but are not limited to senior, adult, and youth recreation, sports, aquatic, adaptive recreation, performing arts programs and facilities, active transportation programs, city-wide volunteer programs, and City-wide special events; assists in facilitating programs in recreation and sports facilities; provides administrative support and program assistance to assigned supervisory or management personnel; and performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direction from the assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to assigned staff. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This classification in the Community Services series is responsible for performing duties in support of the City’s various community service programs including, but not limited to; recreation, special events, performing arts, active transportation and community education, volunteer outreach and coordination, and facilities rental activities. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure City facilities, community services programs, activities, and services are safe and effective and provide the highest level of customer satisfaction. Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience coordinating comprehensive recreational programs or programs applicable to specific area of assignment. Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment. Possession of, or successful acquisition within probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED, to be maintained throughout employment. As assigned, possession of a valid Therapeutic Recreation certification, desirable.
