The Pharmacist provides prescribed medications, drugs and other pharmaceuticals as needed for adequate patient care according to professional standards, practices and legal requirements.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Pharmacist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Compounds, labels, packages and dispenses medications and pharmaceuticals.
2. Oversees the work of pharmacy technicians.
3. Interprets and clarifies orders for all types of medications.
4. Monitors drug therapy as assigned by medical staff; suggests alternative drug therapy when appropriate. Consults with and advises medical staff personnel regarding utilization of drugs and pharmaceuticals.
5. Acts as liaison with nursing and medical staff concerning prescriptions, orders, drug information, adverse drug reactions, incidents and concerns.
6. Ensures secure storage and dispensing of narcotics and other controlled substances on a regular basis.
7. Researches drug information requests and responds promptly.
8. Advises patients, family and employees on use of various medications including dosage, side effects and directions when appropriate.
9. Participates in Q.I. review; regularly documents inspection of all nursing units.
10. Replenishes emergency and other carts/boxes for nursing units.
11. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, hospital quality improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
12. Checks stock on a regular basis to identify and reorder outdated stock and ensure that stock is maintained in accordance with manufacturer requirements.
13. Processes patient charges for pharmaceuticals and central supply items as required.
14. Assists Director in maintenance of patient records, files, computer databases and other records.
15. Maintains department facilities, equipment (including computer software and hardware), and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff.
16. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
17. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of pharmacy.
2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
3. Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
1. Minimum one year of experience as a Pharmacist in a clinical setting.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Registered Pharmacist License.
