Job Summary

The Research Engineer III will contribute to proposal development and the execution of complex research projects to develop innovative solutions, improve existing products and ensure project alignment with company objectives. The role requires an engineer with hands-on problem-solving skills and a broad range of technical skills across many engineering disciplines. The ideal candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary research and development team focused on advancing sensor technology, predictive modeling and existing corrosion monitoring products.

Primary Responsibilities:

Project Proposal and Execution • Participate in developing ideas and the writing of proposals to advance corrosion research and product development. • Support interdisciplinary research projects and new technology development with a focus on materials testing, aerospace structures, corrosion, coatings, and environment assisted cracking. • Partake in project expenses tracking and financial and resources forecasts. • Co-produce high quality project deliverables such as written project reports. • Engage in strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Technical work • Design experiments, develop test procedures, and execute measurements in a laboratory setting. • Design and validate measurement systems prototypes in CAD software packages, with the perspective of utility and ease of manufacturing. • Perform analysis of experimental data using engineering software packages to improve our understanding of corrosion and materials degradation processes. • Write reports, standard operating procedures, and product documentation, in addition to executing professional communication with internal and external collaborators.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree in a relevant field (material science, mechanical engineering, chemistry). A Ph.D. is preferred. Experience: Internship or research experience in engineering, including material science, corrosion, or mechanical design.

Required Skills:

• Experience writing proposals, technical papers, and/or scientific reports. • Knowledge of corrosion science and metallurgy. • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. • Experience with the development of innovative design solutions, evaluation of options, and implementation of solutions to meet timing, product cost and reliability targets. • Experience with sample preparation, data acquisition systems, and data analysis for materials testing or characterization. • Experience communicating research results (e.g. peer-reviewed publications, conference posters, conference presentations). • Strong task and time management skills. • Good communication and interpersonal skills. • Experience with one or more of the following: SOLIDWORKS, Ansys, Autodesk Inventor, Python, data analysis package (such as Jupyter, R…) • Ability to learn new skills quickly and apply engineering knowledge in a fast-paced, collaborative laboratory research environment.

Desired Skills:

• Corrosion-specific laboratory experience using potentiostats to perform polarization scans and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. • Laboratory experience taking environmentally assisted cracking measurements and analyzing results. • Experience in data processing and presentation through data analysis software or computer programming. • Practical corrosion and materials testing skills including metallographic surface preparation, solution preparation, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. • Specific experience prototyping, organizing and developing novel measurement testing from the design to manufacturing stage, including clear documentation of all steps along the process. • Operation and use of unique mechanical and electrochemical test systems, monitoring material performance, evaluating material degradation, and hypothesizing mitigation strategies. • Experience or knowledge of mechanical design for manufacturing. • Experience in project management
