Position Summary:

Founded in 1968, Special Olympics is a global movement to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities. Volunteers are the lifeblood of Special Olympics. Volunteers hold an array of roles critical to the operations and excellence of Special Olympics globally, at all levels of the organization, particularly at the Accredited Program and grassroots level. Volunteers represent the largest workforce in our movement.

Candidates for this role should desire to be part of a high-performing team with a high commitment to innovation, collaboration, and superior internal and external customer service. It is expected that this individual will possess or develop the necessary areas of knowledge and/or expertise regarding volunteer management and Special Olympics. This position will oversee global volunteer development and engagement work, with primary responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Be a subject matter expert on volunteer trends, approaches, and solutions, within Special Olympics and across the nonprofit sector.
  • Work collaboratively to develop a holistic global volunteer engagement strategy, addressing key aspects of volunteer management (needs assessment, strategic recruitment, safeguarding measures and compliance, professional development, funding, ongoing education, event operations, retention, recognition, etc.).
  • Support the local organizing committee (LOC) of SOI-conducted World Games and other Special Olympics international competitions in volunteer engagement and management.
  • Collaborate with SOI departments and Regions to support volunteer engagement efforts.
  • Educate, equip, and empower staff to advance the consistency, growth, quality, and sustainability of unpaid (volunteer) leadership throughout their Region.
  • Establish and lead a global volunteer management advisory committee.
  • Support creation, translation, and regional adaptation of volunteer resources and training materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications/Traits:
  • 3-5 years of professional experience with a state/provincial, national, or international multi-tiered/federated model non-profit or for-profit organization.
  • Experience leading strategic volunteer engagement and management.
  • High commitment to superior customer service and quality.
  • Servant leader mindset and behavior.
  • Flexible and comfortable working in a high-productivity environment with changing priorities, initiatives, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to identify organizational needs and operationalize solutions.
  • Open to mentorship and learning; ongoing willingness to build upon current knowledge.
  • Excellent active listening, interpersonal communication, written, and oral skills.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Strong project and time management skills.
  • Self-motivator comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to meet travel expectations as needed.
  • Proficient computer skills (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Bachelor's degree or relevant related educational equivalent(s). or equivalent experience.
Preferable Qualifications/Traits:
  • First-hand experience with Special Olympics or other non-profit volunteer experience.
  • Comfortable working in a multi-cultural and international operating environment.
  • Professional and/or personal experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Experience with safeguarding and/or risk management.
  • Knowledge of Smartsheet, Microsoft Teams, Power Bi.
