A recent independent assessment of gun violence in Salem, Oregon identified a need for a proactive and collaborative approach to combat violent crime. An increase in shootings and a longer-term upward trend of violence has impacted the Salem area. For law enforcement and community members, there is no higher priority than the protection of life and physical safety within our community.

In early 2024, the City convened a broader, collective discussion on how the community, can and should respond was initiated. The result was a countywide commitment from government officials and a myriad of community-based partners to work together with a focus on what mattersthe community's safety. The outcome of these facilitated community conversations, at the end of 2024, will be a strategy and plan of action to reduce community violence in Salem.
