Overview

McGuireWoods LLP has an opening for a Manager, Risk Management in our Richmond or Charlotte office. This position provides risk management and support services for the Office of General Counsel (OGC). As part of the risk management team, the Manager, Risk Management shares responsibilities for risk management and litigation-related tasks such as tracking and overseeing aspects of firm-related compliance programs; working with various stakeholders on legal holds, file transfers and database management; and opening, maintaining and closing electronic and physical files. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of litigation, be familiar with law firm operations and professional responsibility and state bar compliance issues related to the practice of law, be technically adept, have the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, work well collaboratively, and maintain a strong sense of confidentiality and discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Handles special projects and tasks as assigned by the Deputy General Counsel or General Counsel.
  • Supports claim and circumstance reporting process and keeps claim management records.
  • Produces status reports upon request.
  • Supervises day-to-day workload of Risk Management Assistant.
  • Coordinates the annual lawyer certification process.
  • Verifies bar admission status and tracks admission to the bars of the jurisdiction where lawyers' resident offices are located.
  • Monitors payment of bar dues for mandatory state bars.
  • Maintains databases tracking bar and pro hac vice admissions; service as a fiduciary, registered agent, and officer or director; public office information; material business interests; and business associate agreements.
  • Manages lawyer departures, including addressing registered agent and fiduciary commitments, returning vault documents to clients or client representatives, and working with departing lawyers, Records, Practice Support, and IT to collect, file in the document management system, and transfer personal and client electronic records.
  • Prepares responsive documents and files for production in response to subpoenas directed to the firm for lawyer and employee records and personnel files.
  • Works with Records, Practice Support, and IT, as needed, to collect and transfer personal electronic records when staff leave the firm and facilitate filing of firm and client records in the document management system.
  • Maintains meeting minutes of the Executive Committee and Board of Partners.
  • Helps prepare and track the annual risk management budget for personnel costs, including training, travel, and professional development. Prepare variance reports at least quarterly for Deputy General Counsel.
  • Trains OGC staff how to open OGC matters and circulates notices of new such matters and opens files as needed.
  • Participates in interviewing, selecting, and training of subordinates with the Deputy General Counsel.
  • Administers OGC eRoom, and files partner, senior counsel, and counsel agreements.
Qualifications
  • College Degree is required, a J.D. is a plus but not required, and five to 10 years law firm litigation experience.
  • Familiarity with eRooms and software used to maintain multiple databases.
  • Knowledge of e-Discovery rules, review and production procedures and associated technology, such as Relativity, Summation and Concordance is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with lawyers and staff throughout the firm.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under time constraints and deadlines.
  • Self-starter who works well without direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
