The Medical Assistant is a health professional who supports the work of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals in the clinic, community and skilled facility settings. This individual is responsible for performing routine clinical and administrative duties under the direct supervision of the primary care provider (PCP) or registered nurse.

Duties include responding to messages from patients; scheduling appointments; obtaining medical histories and vital signs; explaining medical procedures; collecting laboratory specimens including phlebotomy; administering electrocardiograms; *administer injections or medications as directed by the primary care provider and under supervision. (*LPN only)

Performance Responsibilities and Standards:

  • Administrative tasks - manage medical records, patient scheduling, billing, insurance.
  • Completes chart preparation for providers.
  • Greets patients, assists with check-in as needed, paperwork completion.
  • Maintain exam rooms with necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares equipment and aids primary care provider during treatment, examination and testing of patients.
  • Collection of selected data about the health status of the patient.
  • Participate in the development of the plan of care with other team members and safely implements that plan.
  • Communicate in an attentive and individualized manner, verifying patient understanding.
  • Secures a translator for patients when necessary.
  • Provide instruction/teaching to the patient according to the educational plan.
  • Document care provided or procedures performed accurately on patient records.
  • Provide patient care in a safe, comfortable and private environment.
  • Assists with patient referrals to other community agencies or specialists as needed.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures including office and state protocols
  • Effectively cope with typical job stress
  • Regular operation of a personal or agency assigned vehicle for travel to patient homes or facilities.
  • Ability to get in and out of a vehicle multiple times throughout the day.
  • Capability to transport necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school degree or GED required, associate's degree in a medical field preferred or equivalent experience. Certificate as a Medical Assistant highly desirable.
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Strong time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional practice, continued growth and self-evaluation.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Comfort working in varied settings, including office environments, patient homes, and nursing facilities, with exposure to differing noise levels, lighting, and temperature conditions.
  • Adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, confidentiality, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients and peers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
Physical Requirements:
  • Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions.
  • Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the telephone.
  • Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.
  • Other: Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting.
  • Comfort working in varied settings, including office environments, patient homes, and nursing facilities, with exposure to differing noise levels, lighting, and temperature conditions.
  • Pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted,
  • Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections.
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Category I - Employee has tasks that routinely involve exposure or potential exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
