Accountant Job Summary Southern Fuel Accounting supports fuel accounting for Southern Company and affiliates (APC, GPC, MPC, SNC, and SPC). This position will perform accounting and analytical tasks in support of the company’s fleet of coal and oil power plants. Primary Job Responsibilities Perform monthly financial closing processes for fuel, including preparing journal entries, providing supporting calculations, variance analysis, and monthly reconciliations. Prepare, process, and resolve monthly billing for fuel-related purchases. Provide key support and system testing for fuel management systems (ComTrac). Perform account reconciliations. Support internal and external audits. Perform financial reporting tasks in compliance with GAAP and Sarbanes/Oxley requirements, including providing reports, schedules, memos, and explanations supporting each OpCo’s financial statements. Stay current with GAAP, FERC, and state regulatory issues affecting fuel and provide input for needed accounting functionality changes. Publish various fuel-related regulatory reports and data requests mandated by FERC, EIA, State PSCs, and others. Educational Requirements A BS/BA degree with a major or concentration in Accounting is required. Advanced degree or professional certification is a plus. Experience, Knowledge, & Skills Minimum of 2 years of recent general accounting experience (public accounting experience preferred), including experience in financial reporting, journal entry preparation, and account reconciliations. Understanding of GAAP, FERC, SEC, and other rules, regulations, and reporting requirements, as well as Company policies and guidelines. Knowledge of (or exposure to) Oracle Cloud. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a commitment to accuracy, and attention to detail. Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-direct, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and build working relationships with both internal and external customers. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to identify and implement process improvements. Proficiency with Southern Company financial applications and processes is a plus. Microsoft Excel proficiency.
