Job Summary: The Laboratory Safety Specialist will provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving institutional staff, students, and university wide community. The Specialist performs and completes special projects as needed to address institutional safety issues. Duties may include functions in any or all of the following areas: Fire and Life Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and, Environmental Protection, Biological, Chemical, and Laboratory Compliance. Duties & Essential Job Functions: Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazardous 1. Participates in the management and process flow of various Laboratory Safety programs (laboratory audits, lab moves, safety seal, etc.). Assists in the review and monitoring of safety programs for effectiveness and efficiency. 2. Responds to internal institutional incidents including, but not limited to hazardous chemical/biological spills. 3. Assists in the hazardous materials collection, storage, and disposal process. Compliance 4. Assists in maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental guidelines and regulations. Provides regulatory interpretations, technical assistance, and recommendations related to laboratory safety programs and other departmental programs. 5. Provides training to the TCU community and on laboratory safety program management operations, regulations, and requirements to maintain compliance. Program Support and Implementation 6. Develops, reviews and disseminates documentation relating to Laboratory Safety programs and processes. 7. Develops and maintains Laboratory Safety communication programs institutional wide including the Burnett School of Medicine. 8. Creates metrics and data analysis for performance measurement, budget forecasts, and program recommendations. Documents data and generates reports for departmental evaluation. 9. Provides support to the Hazardous Material Safety Manager in maintaining compliance with university safety programs. 10. Oversees lab safety portions of lab moves to include risk assessment, communications, assignment of resources and lab clearance. 11. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional compliance with university programs. 12. Assists in drafting comments on proposed state and federal regulations as needed 13. Other duties as assigned. Required Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Applied or Basic Sciences. 3 years' experience handling chemical substances, including implementing safety compliance. Experience in performing audits of Biological Safety laboratories (BSL) and Animal Biological Safety laboratories (ABSL). Preferred Education & Experience: Master's Degree. Certified Industrial Hygienist {CIH). Certified Safety Professional {CSP). 4 years() relevant experience conducting inspections, following hazardous communication, using laboratory PPE, and/or participating in laboratory incident responses. Required Licensure/Certification/Specialized Training: Course certificate or other related proof of knowledge of laboratory safety measures (e.g., HAZWOPER, HAZCOM course certificate, etc). Valid driver's license. Ability to pass driver background check. Preferred Licensure, Certification, and/or Specialized Training: Certified Industrial Hygienist {CIH). Certified Safety Professional {CSP). Associate Safety Professional {ASP) Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of laboratory related OSHA regulations, industrial standards, and best work practices Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and compliance requirements. Knowledge of chemicals and laboratory supplies. Knowledge of record keeping techniques. Knowledge of customer service techniques. Skill in navigation of Microsoft Windows. Skill in some or all components of Microsoft Office. Ability to communicate quantitative and qualitative information. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
