Produces and coordinates the production of braille and accessible materials, in consultation with the teacher of the visually impaired, to ensure the student’s access to the general education curriculum. Reports to: Principal and Director of Student Support Services Qualifications:

Job Description Work closely with and under the direction of a teacher consultant of the visually impaired (TCVI). Communicate with the TCVI regarding information pertaining to areas/subjects needing additional support, upcoming events, or observed barriers to the student’s learning. Transcribe curriculum materials (textbooks, teacher-made materials, pictorial layouts, math and science notations, workbooks) into accessible formats (braille, auditory, tactile, electronic, OCR) using various tools and devices (embossers, printers, refreshable braille displays, tactile image enhancers). Interpret visual information and provide audio descriptions of the environment and/or classroom that are meaningful and appropriate from the student’s perspective. Provide accessible content on-the-fly. Create an environment conducive to learning that parallels the physical, social, and developmental levels of the student assigned to them. Assist in helping the student become as independent as possible. Participate in METs, IEPs, and team meetings and assist in recording progress towards goals. Assist teachers and instructors, including academic and non-academic (art, music, PE, foreign language, technology) in understanding the most productive way to include the student in group and classroom activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Must have knowledge and skills necessary to determine most appropriate methods for adapting materials and producing quality braille. Must be knowledgeable, or will complete training or course work to acquire knowledge of UEB contracted braille (Grade II) and Nemeth Code in textbook format. Must be knowledgeable, or will complete training, in BANA code for transcriber’s notes, tactile graphics, formatting, and other braille codes. Must have working knowledge of other braille codes as needed for music, chemistry, computer braille, foreign languages, etc. Must be knowledgeable in technology such as: braille technology, audio technology, Google platforms, online platforms, braille translation software, and screen readers including:

Must be able to operate a variety of office and braille equipment including printer, copier, braille embosser, book binder, paper cutter, computer and assigned braille translation software, thermoform copier, tactile image enhancer. Must be able to adapt and interpret text, pictures, and graphics, and construct meaningful tactile graphics (geometric shapes, scatter plots, charts, graphs, maps, pictures, diagrams, tables, descriptors, and other tactile displays) from the perspective of the visually impaired student under the supervision of the TCVI. Must be able to operate and assist student in the operation and care of adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and materials (such as BrailleNoteTouch+, abacus, MathWindow, MantisQ40, Victor Reader Stream, iPad, Perkins Brailler, etc.). Must become familiar with various sources for braille materials. Assumes responsibility for learning and adapting to the student’s special physical, communicative, and emotional needs. Assists the student to understand classroom assignments and utilize organizational systems to foster independence. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Must be able to communicate professionally and effectively in oral and written forms. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written directions. Must maintain cultural awareness and sensitivity. Must work cooperatively with students, staff, and team members. Must demonstrate understanding of the instructional needs of students who are visually impaired. Must be able to work independently. Must maintain confidentiality. Should develop and maintain in oneself and in the students, proper attitudes, good work habits, and respect for the rights and properties of others. Must follow district policies and procedures. Must follow directions, manage time, and prioritize work in an efficient manner to complete braille and material preparations as needed by a deadline. Must demonstrate effective troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Must be able to seek and use technical assistance available within the state and beyond for specialty areas such as braille music, foreign language, and computer braille.
