Job Description

The Database Engineer 5 is a professional, master role that plans and conducts assignments, generally large and important projects, or more than one project. The Engineer is fully responsible for the systems and infrastructure that support a product. The person directs and guides the design to ensure compliance with technical and architectural standards. The Engineer understands and communicates the non-functional requirements that are necessary for successful product operation. Additionally, the position ensures the implementation and transition into production happens smoothly. While the solution runs in production this person is responsible to resolve any problems or issues that are escalated. The Engineer engages vendors in the resolution of incidents as necessary, and once an incident is resolved, the Engineer is responsible to ensure all defects in the system or process are identified, tracked, and resolved. This person ensures that all proposed changes have been adequately planned and reviewed, eliminating the possibility of unplanned service outages. This is a leadership role that mentors other engineers. This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel. Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain databases
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, ensuring efficient data retrieval and storage
  • Ensure data integrity through backups, replication, and disaster recovery planning
  • Monitor database health, identifying and resolving issues promptly
  • Investigate and troubleshoot performance bottlenecks, errors, and anomalies
  • Regularly test backup and recovery procedures
  • Optimize SQL queries for better performance
  • Create and manage indexes
  • Provide valuable insights and contribute to the design, development, and architecture of data solutions
  • Create standards and procedures for operations teams
  • Maintain documentation for database on-call/run books for operations
  • Understand and maintain database monitoring software
  • Plan and execute database migrations and upgrades
  • Minimize downtime during transitions
  • On-Call rotation in support of Database Platform
  • Off-hours maintenance activities as scheduled
  • Ad hoc management of data for both reporting and performance adjustments
  • Respond to critical alerts, security issues, and requests
  • Follow optimal engineering practices
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent professional experience
  • Eight years of relevant professional experience which must include six years of experience supporting product development activities and guiding technology decisions
  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge in field of specialization to the completion of significant assignments
  • Mastery of SQL with PostgreSQL and MySQL
  • Experience with Cassandra NoSQL database a plus
  • AWS Cloud database knowledge
  • Strong skills in Linux
  • Experience with some form of shell scripting in support of databases (BASH, KSH, PERL, and/or Python)
  • Familiarity with development support tools, such as GIT, JIRA, and Confluence
  • Outstanding troubleshooter with the ability to react well under pressure
  • Experience with change, incident, and problem management processes. Strong operational understanding and control.
  • Experience with both transactional and analytical data processing
  • Clear and accurate written and verbal communications
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven successful leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and train peers
  • Strong understanding of the business processes being supported by the solution
  • Collaborates and interacts with others in a professional office environment
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for extended periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment
  • Preferred: Master's degree
