Madison, United States Promega Full time
Job Description

OUR TEAM: The Scientific Applications team works directly with customers as well as teams across the company on projects that influence product research and development, manufacturing, and sales. We provide highly flexible, lab-based scientific support across the diverse range of Promega's products. To do so, we adapt Promega chemistries to solve customers' unique problems and optimize existing products for new uses. We are positioned to directly help scientists in academic, biotech, and medical diagnostics industries to solve technology-related problems. Our projects result in an immediate impact, making the work highly rewarding.

We frequently learn about new fields and technologies, and we work collaboratively to share that knowledge. We are located in the Kornberg Center, with beautiful and spacious facilities and access to advanced scientific equipment to support our research objectives. We are motivated scientists who like to learn, and we have a good time doing it

YOUR ROLE: As a Scientific Applications Intern, you will work with an Applications Scientist to plan and execute experiments across our diverse product portfolio to help scientists who are our current and future customers successfully use Promega chemistries in their research. In addition to working in the lab, you will regularly communicate results through written reports and oral presentations during Scientific Applications lab meetings. You will receive experience and training on many technologies and areas of molecular biology that enable support of scientists within and outside of Promega.

YOUR EXPERIENCE: You have some previous laboratory experience, either during undergraduate coursework or from research in a lab at your institution. Ideally, you will have completed two years of college coursework prior to summer 2025. You are reliable, and your work and education history demonstrate your motivation and attention to detail. You are enthusiastic about learning new techniques in the lab and about exploring career opportunities for scientists in the biotech industry. You like to communicate about the work you are doing and would like to further develop both verbal and written scientific communication skills. You enjoy working as part of a team on a variety of topics to help other scientists.

JOB OBJECTIVE: The scientist will support and participate in Applications lab activities as assigned by the Applications Scientist. Applications activities may include nucleic acid extraction from various sample types and measurements of extracted nucleic acid quality, as well as propagation and monitoring of tissue culture stocks.

CORE DUTIES:

1. Execute nucleic acid purification protocols. Evaluate the quality of nucleic acid preparations by electrophoresis and spectrophotometric analysis and performance in downstream applications such as polymerase chain reactions (PCR), including real-time PCR.

2. Communicate experimental goals, methods, results and conclusions through written reports and oral presentations.

3. Maintain clear and complete records of laboratory procedures and results.

4. Maintain mammalian cells through routine tissue culture. Monitor cell health and expand cultures as needed for Applications experiments.

5. Perform Applications experiments with Promega products based on customer inquiries and concerns and in support of product development efforts. Communicate results to appropriate staff.

6. Demonstrates inclusion through their own words and actions and is accountable for a safe workspace. Acts with kindness, curiosity and respect for others.

7. Embracing and being open to incorporating Promega's 6 Emotional & Social Intelligence (ESI) core principles in daily work.

8. Understands and complies with ethical, legal and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Currently enrolled in a life sciences undergraduate program in biochemistry, molecular biology, or similar. Completed two years of course and laboratory work prior to summer 2025, including biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology.

2. Ability to maintain a safe and clean laboratory environment.

3. Ability to work independently with moderate supervision and with other team members in a cooperative manner.

4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience with basic molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid purification, PCR, and electrophoresis.

2. Experience with handling biological samples.

3. Computer background and experience with Windows based programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to work with computer equipment frequently.

2. Ability to wear safety equipment (lab coat, goggles, gloves, etc.).
