Responsibilities:
What does the Chief Radiation Therapist do?

The Chief Radiation Therapist is responsible for the planning, coordination and evaluation of the technical staff. Interacts and directs the radiation therapists and CT simulation technicians in order to effectively deliver a high-quality radiation therapy treatment course for each patient presented. May perform the duties of radiation therapist and mold technicians up to 20% of the time in order to maintain a high-quality care environment. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

The essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Supervises and coordinates all technical staff including evaluating performance to enhance high quality radiation therapy.
  • Participates in QA program to assure accuracy of treatment plan and delivery. Reviews and amends patient billing for accuracy. Participates in the clinical instruction of newly hired radiation staff and radiation therapy students.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, and rewarding and disciplining employees.
  • Directly supervises employees in the radiation oncology program which may include mold technicians, simulation therapists, radiation therapists.
  • Implements standard radiation oncology and diagnostic policies and procedures throughout the practice.
  • Directs the hiring and training of all radiation and imaging personnel for maximum service to patients in accordance with practice and USON policies and procedures.
  • Develops performance expectations, and departmental objectives for radiation staff positions to ensure efficiency and productivity.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Chief Radiation Therapist position will have the following background and experience:
  • Graduate of an accredited radiation therapy technology program, Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years actively practicing as an RTT.
  • Minimum two years prior supervisory experience required.
  • ARRT certification required.
  • Valid state license for radiation therapy.

Must have the ability to utilize components of the treatment-planning computer including but not limited to the use of keyboards, digitizers, trackball and mouse controls. Must be able to stand for 8 hours; lift 40 pound block to shoulder level; have sufficient visual acuity to distinguish structures and isodose displays on computer monitor. Additionally, must be able to align treatment field and monitor patient during radiation therapy treatment; have adequate hearing and speaking capabilities to effectively communicate with patients and staff; have adequate mobility to assist patients on and off treatment couch and document treatment.
