Job Summary

The position will perform field observations and evaluations, perform engineering analyses, prepare associated reports, and with oversight, manage AET project services for transportation related projects. The Engineer 2 position in the Pavement Group will coordinate project services consistent with client's needs by either performing or arranging qualified personnel to perform applicable project services with oversight and supervision (as required). Project services may include Ground Penetrating Radar, Falling Weight Deflectometer, soil borings, pavement cores, highspeed profilograph, as well as laboratory testing including pavement recycling mix designs, asphalt testing, and soils testing. The pavement group routinely works on projects across the country for public and private sector clients.

  • Assist Project Managers in preparing proposals and formal engineering reports.
  • Perform and/or supervise inspection, observation and testing services, including those jobs with a higher degree of difficulty.
  • Prepare reports and other documentation detailing results of tests, evaluations, or analyses, including appropriate opinions, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Coordinate work on multi-disciplined field projects, including performing observations/tests, scheduling other personnel, reporting and invoicing.
  • Manage project tasks from initial authorization to completion including technical work, scheduling, determining testing requirements, monitoring project budget, and quality control.
  • Prepare and coordinate field work instructions, maps, planning, permitting, and project specific items.
  • Locate and mark soil borings, pavement cores, and perform site reconnaissance.
  • Maintain client, project team and in-house communication.
  • Make professional judgements with support of senior staff members.
  • Conduct field observations, material sampling, and testing procedures.
  • Prepare reports of field and laboratory work.
  • Analyze and interpret data collected from field and laboratory testing.
  • Ability to interact successfully with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.
  • Conduct duties in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations and AET's QA and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Evaluate the complexity of a project or its conditions, recognize when more difficult judgements or situations are present such that higher level engineering supervision/assistance should be provided.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Provides work direction to field engineers, technicians, and drillers as coordinated with senior staff.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or other related engineering field.
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • Engineer in Training registration in areas licensed by the state
  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering or scientific principles within pavement and geotechnical areas and ability to apply that knowledge to the job.
  • Communication skills sufficient to convey complex technical information in a clear manner to diverse audiences.
  • Maintain valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Skills
  • Advanced experience using personal computer software, especially Microsoft Office.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting data, accurately observing and recording field activities, reading plans and specifications as related to the position.
  • Experience determining and coordinating daily work schedule based on project priorities and client/department schedules.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE).


Work Environment

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This position also may require field work in outdoor conditions on construction sites with uneven ground and adverse weather conditions. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
