To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.As a Senior Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC superconducting magnets feeder team (FEED), you will own hardware from early concepts to SPARC delivery, performing thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis using hand calculations and finite element methods. You will develop design notes, technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to manufacture and install the SPARC FEED hardware and supporting systems. In your role you will also support procurement in the preparation and execution of manufacturing contracts.This team member will:Produce new and iterate on existing design concepts using NX, using a deep understanding of physics and structural mechanics for both metallics and compositesPerform thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis to inform decisions on SPARC magnets, including conductors, insulation, joints, supports, fluid manifolds, insulator breaks.Own product from final design through final assembly and commissioning for SPARC, ensuring SPARC is able to achieve first plasma on-scheduleDiagnose issues on the production and assembly line and provide path forward based on known understanding of hardwareWork with the SPARC plant and tokamak operations team to integrate the system into overall control system architectureWork with experimental teams on instrumentation, measurement, and correlation of experiment to analysisProvide technical support to procurement during manufacturingPrepare reports, presentations, and other documentation to serve as design review and validationDevelop team systems to better serve the FEED and magnet systems teams during the ARC eraThe ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or another relevant fieldExcellent fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems such as static structures and heat transfer. Relevant hands-on experience in the form of parts designed for high loads and extreme environmentsDemonstrated record of design of mechanical components beyond desktop scale. E.g. high power (MW+), high mass (ton+), high force (MN+)At least 5 years of engineering design and analysis experienceAt least 3 years providing engineering support to production hardware in the form of resolving technical issues and executing design changes for manufacturing ramp upSolid background in component design and performing detailed analysesFamiliarity with all steps in the design process with an emphasis on creativity and simplicityAuthored documentation in the form of specifications to drive requirements to manufacturing and assembly.Be self-motivated and exhibit excellent problem-solving skillsLed interdisciplinary teams to deliver hardware on time and to requirementsAdditional experience and/or qualifications:Experience with NX, ANSYS, and COMSOL Experience with vacuum, cryogenics, nuclear irradiation, superconductivity, electromagneticsHands on experience developing and executing testing to buy down technical risk in new hardware devleopmentPerform activities such as sitting for extended periods of timeWork in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics#LI-HybridCFS team members thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have demonstrated exceptional results through a range of different pursuits.
