The Emergency Department at Windham provides patients with high levels of care, with symptoms ranging from traumas to the common cold to drug overdoses and everything in between. Our multi-disciplinary team includes Registered Nurses, Advanced Providers, Nursing Assistants, and administrative staff. The Emergency Department at Windham is equipped with 23 beds, including a fast-track area, and behavioral health space. Our RNs see a wide variety of patients, including those with behavioral health and opioid related needs. Our staff prides itself in its flexibility, initiative to help others in need as well as our strong cohesiveness as a team which ultimately gives our patients the highest level of care they expect and deserve.

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of an RN or his/her designee, the Patient Care Technician will assist the RN and MD in providing direct care to patients according to age specific needs.

Patient types include:

  • neonate
  • infant
  • child
  • adolescent
  • adult
  • older adult.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Model quality patient/customer service by demonstrating a willingness to serve all customers at all times. Maintain awareness of patient needs while utilizing tact, discretion, and compassion in responding to those needs.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living and record in the medical record.
  • Collaborate with the nursing team to ambulate, transfer, and/or turn patient as appropriate and document. Always maintain proper body mechanics.
  • Obtain and record vital signs, blood glucose, EKGs, and patient intake/output while reporting any abnormal findings to the Registered Nurse.
  • Performs basic therapeutic measures under the direction of the Registered Nurse to assist in achieving patient care outcomes.
  • Monitors cardiac rhythms and reports changes to the appropriate Registered Nurse as they occur. Documents strip interpretation per unit protocol.
  • Accurately performs phlebotomy for the collection of blood and blood cultures. Accurately collects and obtains specimens, sputum, urine, stool.
  • Perform visual acuity. Assists MD with surgical procedures (i.e. set-up, dressing applications). Properly fits crutches and reviews, instructs patient in crutch walking and applies orthopedic devices (i.e. sling, write splint, knee immobilizer)
  • Perform daily equipment checks.
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education
High School or equivalency
Experience
Certified Nurses Aid Certificate, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) with clinical experience required, Nursing Student OR Successful completion of Windham PCT 3 boot-camp
Licensure, Certification, Registration
BLS Certification required or competition within the first three months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements
Knowledge of medical terminology and computer skills preferred
Knowledge of arrhythmia detection and phlebotomy preferred
