Who We Are

The Riverside Hawks Athletic/Academic Program is a year round organization serving more than 350 boys and girls from the ages of 5-17, who live primarily in the New York Metropolitan area. Currently over 70% of the boys and girls that participate in the program live in Harlem, the Bronx and Washington Heights. Founded in 1961 by the Riverside Church of NY, the Hawks program is in its 60th year and has long been nationally recognized for its success and leadership in the field of youth development.

The purpose of the program is to encourage excellence in sports as a way of encouraging and advancing excellence in academics, developing constructive personal goals, achieving sound moral standards and providing an extended family to assist young people in becoming valuable contributors in their community.

The success of our program in developing young basketball players is legendary and is evident in the number of alumni who have gone on to academic success in college and athletic success in college and in the NBA. Many Riverside Hawks alumni have gone on to play professional basketball, including Ty Jerome, Donovan Mitchell, Eric Paschal, Metta Sandiford-Artest, Nate Archibald, Kenny Smith, Kenny Anderson, Malik Sealy, Chris Mullin, Elton Brand and many others.

The Riverside Hawks are unashamedly seekers of excellence in every facet of our program. We are committed to promoting general health, educational advancement, character development and spiritual development through our program. Our program has a tremendous reputation for supporting academic excellence. Approximately 85% of our students are people of color. Over the last five years 100% of our high school seniors have graduated high school and attended college or post graduate programs.

The Riverside Hawks Program is under the auspices of the Riverside Hawks Hope Health and Hoops Corporation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. The Board of Directors is comprised of a highly committed, diverse group of professionals, who are dedicated to building upon the outstanding Hawks tradition of developing children and teenagers through a holistic process.

POSITION DETAILS

The Development Director is a newly created position. The candidate will have a unique, highly visible leadership role within the organization reporting directly to the Board of Directors. The candidate will be directly responsible for the development and growth of the programs resources through fundraising, event planning/execution, and implementation of a comprehensive development and communications strategy with its constituents. The Board seeks to hire a vibrant and entrepreneurial Development Director who enthusiastically supports the mission of the organization and possesses the passion and experience required to build and lead the fundraising efforts of the entire organization. The candidate must have an established track record as a development professional with multiple social populations in the New York metropolitan area. This includes, but is not limited to, non-profit fundraising from external sources including foundations, businesses and high-net-worth individuals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong personal commitment to the mission of the program and the educational advancement of underserved youth in New York metropolitan area.

Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university, with a BSc degree (minimum) or masters degree in social work (LCSW credential) a plus.

Minimum of five years of experience in non-profit fundraising.

Creative and strategic thinking skills that enable an ability to develop, evaluate, prioritize and implement fundraising projects.

Demonstrated track record of success in non-profit fundraising for youth sports or academic programs and broad experience cultivating and managing institutional and foundation giving, major donor relationships and contributions, annual fund programs and fundraising events.

Grant writing experience.

Excels in event planning and possesses organizational skills that show a proven track record of moving multiple projects forward simultaneously.

Proven ability to work with Board members and different internal and external constituents to ensure the successful implementation of initiatives.

Possesses flexibility, energy and drive to accomplish targets set by the Board and has a sense of urgency in meeting responsibilities and established deadlines.

Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal (students, parents, staff) and external constituent groups (institutions, corporations, foundations)

Strong written and oral communication skills; computer competency essential; Excellent presentations skills and the ability to convey the mission persuasively.

Proven accuracy, thoroughness, timeliness and attention to detail

Experience with and knowledge of donor/client relationship software such as SALSA, SalesForce or Raisers Edge to assist with managing both donor information and donor outreach activities

JOB REQUIREMENTS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for leading all fundraising efforts and meeting the annual revenue goals through grants, sponsorships, gifts and fundraising events.

Works in close collaboration with the Board to develop and execute an aggressive and comprehensive fundraising plan with goal of sustaining current annual revenues of $1.3 million and increasing annual revenues to $2+ million over next 2-4 years.

Effectively and visibly communicates the mission, programs, and funding needs to donors, philanthropic opinion leaders, donor prospects, and the community at large.

Cultivates and develops institutional giving and major donor relationships and foundation contributions.

Manages and builds out existing portfolio of donors through a planned effort targeting foundations, high-net-worth donors and corporate giving.

Oversees the planning, coordination, and implementation of fundraising events, including the Spring Graduation Celebration and Riverside Hawks Hope, Health, and Hoops Gala, along with other high-value events, such as Annual Giving Campaigns, Marathon Fundraising campaign initiated by Junior Board members and the Shoot-A-Thon.

Develops and manages a comprehensive communication plan for donors using client relationship software to enhance communication with donors through regular program newsletters and ensures the website carries fresh and new content about ongoing program activities.
