Fleet Director

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Operations, the Fleet Director will oversee all aspects of our fleet management, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of our vehicles and equipment. This role involves strategic planning, operational oversight, and team leadership to optimize fleet performance and support our organizational goals. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in fleet management, exceptional leadership skills, and a deep understanding of industry best practices.
Primary Duties:
Maintenance Management:
Implement and follow up on the preventative maintenance program for all rented, leased, and owned equipment at each shop location.
Ensure up-to-date equipment files are maintained at each shop, including repair and maintenance history.
Set and uphold company standards for maintaining all equipment to ensure safety and quality.
Track equipment quality throughout the product lifetime and recommend alternatives as needed.
Track records, licenses, inspections, warranties, and service agreements for the organization's equipment.
Ensure compliance with company systems, policies, and procedures in area shops.
Prepare capital expenditure and disposal budgets annually for approval.
Price alternatives and negotiate the best options for the company to purchase equipment and supplies.
Analyze the most economical repair plans, including decisions on inside or outside repairs.
Assist area shop managers in forecasting requirements, preparing annual budgets, approving expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.
Review monthly budget reports with area shop managers and other levels of management to ensure department goals are met and budgets are adhered to.
Technical Support:
Troubleshoot major repairs to ensure the most economical solutions.
Evaluate repair invoicing and negotiate with vendors to address excessive charges, poor diagnostics, etc.
Coordinate training sessions for equipment with employees as needed.
Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as required.
Fleet Tracking and Analysis:
Track the usage of equipment hours companywide in order to ensure optimal utilization.
Consult Area Management on acquiring and using rental equipment across the company, as needed.
Workforce Development:
Develop a shop workforce that meets the company's needs.
Coordinate training and development programs for shop employees.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 7 years of experience in fleet management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of fleet management software and telematics systems.
Proven ability to manage large fleets and complex logistics operations.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Extensive knowledge of paving, grading, and truck equipment.
Proficiency in various computer programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
Experience with equipment diagnostic and tracking software.
Strong organizational and leadership skills.
Ability to acquire understanding and absorb new information.
Team-oriented with the ability to establish collaborative peer relationships.
Strong problem-detection and resolution skills.
Effective planning, organizing, and scheduling abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
Maintain poise and composure under pressure.
Adaptability to changing priorities or work demands.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Strong listening and comprehension abilities.
Reliability, responsibility, and dependability.
Working Conditions:
Moderate to high noise levels.
Non-environmentally controlled work environment, with exposure to extreme heat and cold.
Other Requirements:
Ability to travel throughout the company footprint to different job sites and area shops as needed.
Ability to stay overnight away from home as needed.
Candidate must reside in Birmingham or the surrounding area.
