Job Description

Manulife Investment Management ("MIM") Private Markets is the private asset management business arm of Manulife's Global Wealth and Asset Management segment that provides origination and management of private asset classes, including real estate, timberland, farmland, infrastructure, private equity, mezzanine debt, senior loans, and secondaries. MIM Private Markets - a key strategic priority for Manulife - is mandated to aggressively grow the asset base, revenue and core earnings, supporting our Insurance and Wealth Businesses as well as on behalf of third-party institutional clients.

The Private Markets Finance team supports the Private Markets business in all financial and business advisory aspects, including on-going performance reporting, longer-term financial planning, key KPIs, product profitability and providing sound financial advice to business and portfolio managers.

Reporting to Managing Director Finance, Private Markets, the Director, Financial Analysis and Advisory, will be accountable for supporting the development of high quality and insightful performance management reporting, product and channel profitability analyses, and comprehensive business unit financial plans and forecasts. The incumbent will drive strategic business decisions leveraging their close relationships and knowledge of Private Markets asset classes and products.

As a trusted business advisor, you will work closely with Institutional, Retail and Retirement channel partners to ensure alignment of targets and priorities. You will also work closely with GWAM FP&A and Accounting & Reporting teams, as well as various Expense partners to help articulate the "what" and "so what" in providing value-added analysis surrounding management reporting, planning and analysis processes. In addition, the incumbent will also be involved in providing advisory support to Manulife Private Markets, a high-growth business and strategic priority for Manulife Financial.

The incumbent will serve as a primary liaison with all Private Markets asset class leadership and operations teams. With a deeper understanding of those asset classes, the Director will bring to bear specialist insight in supporting the execution of management reporting, financial analysis and advisory tasks.

Core Responsibilities:

Business Development and Advisory Support:
  • Proactively finds opportunities to improve product profitability and works with asset class personnel to realize savings.
  • Provide leadership in the setting of accurate and appropriate scorecard targets along tracking of performance against set targets.
  • Track and drive Private Markets margin analysis with keen eye on 3rd party profitability.
  • Lead periodic efficiency exercises focused on expense dilligence and product rationalization.
  • Lead the development of commentary on key performance measurements, including variances and significant transactions for all of Private Markets.
  • Participates in the due diligence and financial analysis around potential major transactions, business decisions and strategic direction of Private Markets.
Management Reporting, Planning and Analysis:
  • Form relationships and collaborate closely with asset class operations and finance personnel.
  • In close collaboration with other Global Finance partners, bring asset class specific knowledge, insights and relationships to assist with high-quality management, financial and important metric reporting, planning, forecasting and analysis for the Private Markets business globally.
  • Develop and handle a knowledgebase of all financial reports, models, and supporting documentation relevant to understanding the asset class businesses.
  • Help facilitate the annual business planning cycle, including development of assets under management, revenue & expense budgets, product and model assumptions, and sensitivity testing.
  • Support Finance data governance (i.e. AUM, flows) and reporting improvements, including self-service tools (i.e. Power BI), to help bring greater transparency.
  • Partner with Global Expense, FP&A, and A&R teams to provide business partners with regular updates on financial performance vs. expectations and 'early warnings' with recommended actions to meet annual financial targets.
  • Find opportunities to build efficiencies in Finance processes and lead change.
  • Analyze financial and non-financial critical metrics for all Private Markets asset classes, with a particular focus on certain asset classes.
  • Ensure key processes remain efficient, clear and well-documented.
  • Support the consolidated financial, management, and regulatory reporting requirements of Manulife Financial Corporation as needed.

What we are looking for
  • University Business Degree and CPA or MBA (specialization in accounting or Finance) designation.
  • Multifaceted experience in accounting, financial services and/or consulting with experience with private asset investment manager financial reporting considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and curiosity about learning.
  • Motivated to work under tight monthly and quarterly reporting deadlines while prioritizing multiple projects and deliverables.
  • Collaborative and able to get results working with different business divisions and supporting functions in a matrix structure.
  • Well organized and with high level of energy and initiative to perform in a fast paced and ambitious environment.
  • Good presentation and business writing skills required to advise senior management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize deadlines.
  • Sophisticated level of proficiency in MS Excel and other MS office tools (e.g. Word and PowerPoint to develop reports, documents and presentations).

Salary range is expected to be between
$103,050.00 CAD - $185,490.00 CAD
