JOB SUMMARY

The McNair Area Coordinator of the McNair First-Year Living and Learning Center works collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to envision and implement a dynamic residential program for first year students that is linked closely with the first-year student success initiatives of the college. This is a live-in position that serves as a supervisor, educator, counselor, and administrator, as well as a visible, active leader on campus in fostering a vibrant first year residential community characterized by diversity, active involvement, and engaged learning. The Area Coordinator will apply knowledge of student development theory to the first-year population in a way that encourages academic, personal, and social transition to Columbia College; and performs related duties as assigned. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. This position reports to the Director of Residence Life and Housing, supervises eight (8) undergraduate Resident Assistants and coordinates the staffing, training, and supervising of approximately 40 Desk Assistants; and serves as part of the Student Affairs team with involvement in programs and events sponsored by other departments in Student Affairs, as well as relevant institutional committees.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates student staff; directly supervises eight Resident Assistants.
  • Works with the Area Coordinator for the Upper-class Halls in monitoring the actions of the desk staff and operations in McNair residence hall.
  • Supervises the Residence Hall Desk staff operations, including all hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating; completes oversight of the Desk Assistant Program.
  • Provides leadership in residence hall programming designed to create a community.
  • Works collaboratively in planning and implementing programs and events which involve faculty and administrators in living-learning experiences for students.
  • Makes appropriate referrals of students with personal and/or academic issues.
  • Responds proactively to student and parent concerns.
  • Conducts mediation interventions with students in conflict as needed.
  • Engages students in the process of developing an academically and socially supportive community and addressing community issues as they arise.
  • Manages all aspects of the McNair living environment including damage assessments, space reservations, storage, etc.
  • Adjudicates student conduct issues.
  • Works closely with campus constituents to address facilities and safety issues.
  • Conducts regular Health and Safety Inspections.
  • Successfully completes administrative assignments and tasks (i.e. submitting service requests, programming reports, etc.).
  • Serves on various campus committees.
  • Participates collaboratively in staff selection and training, the spring Room Lottery and Selection process, Orientation programs, and other large-scale processes.
  • Serves on the on-call staff rotation schedule and crisis response team.
  • Conducts Early Alert meetings with at risk students.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life and Housing.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or closely related field; Master's degree preferred in student affairs, higher education or counseling.
  • Prior work experience in higher education or involvement in Residence Life or Student Affairs preferred.
  • Prior experience living and/or working in a multicultural college or university residence hall preferred.
  • This is a live-in position; may be required to work additional hours during the academic year which may include early/late hours or occasional weekends.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, utilizing Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and Canvas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling some of the time and requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
