Automation Engineering Director

The Automation Engineering Director will oversee Wauseon Machine's Electrical Engineering, Robotic Automation, and Mechanical Engineering teams and manage contract resources involved in mechanical automation design, electrical hardware design, PLC and HMI programming, and robot programming for custom automation and robotics systems. Our work spans multiple industries, including material handling, medical devices, automotive, and consumer goods manufacturing, offering a diverse and exciting range of projects.
This is a fully indirect position and key leadership role with significant responsibility for the department's KPIs and resource allocation. Oversee corporate control standards, technology initiatives, goals, employee development, and represent the department on the leadership team. Directly manage the electrical, robotic, and mechanical engineering managers, mechanical leads, and technical writers.
Core Responsibilities:
- Responsible for resource planning, KPIs, corporate and technology initiatives, department goals, and project budgets.
- Guide the team from concept to final machine acceptance and oversee all management duties, including mentoring mechanical engineers, creating development plans, conducting one-on-one meetings, managing disciplinary actions, and performing performance reviews.
- Full accountability for project execution performance metrics including schedule, budget, scope, risk, and customer satisfaction, across all engineering functions.
- Requires excellent customer communication, collaboration and teamwork skills, providing leadership and guidance for both internal and external concepts and final design reviews.
- Oversee Machine Safety Risk Assessments with a cross functional team, collaborate with Controls Engineers to develop a Sequence of Events and Timing Chart and conduct DFMEA/PFMEA. Support the project through manufacturing, assembly, and runoff while overseeing updating and finalization of documentation for customer submission.
- Provide technical support to other departments, identify and prioritize automation improvements, contribute to the operations roadmap to meet goals, and participate in regular meetings to address issues and training needs.
- Travel to customer sites to support sales/applications as an Automation Division leadership team representative and to suppliers/tradeshows for technology initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Prior experience managing managers as direct reports.
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in custom automation design, project team leadership, and supervisory roles.
- History of leadership and mentoring that has consistently met or exceeded individual and departmental performance goals, objectives, and retention.
- Strong team player with an ability to positively collaborate with other department leaders, program managers, and customers to ensure project/team success. Functional knowledge of project management processes.
- Functional knowledge of mechanical design requirements and best practices for designing complex robotic custom automation solutions as well as expertise in PLC and HMI programming, electrical schematic design, robot programming, safety circuits, vision systems, lasers, conveyor and assembly systems, fluid power, and robot systems integration.
- Willingness to travel up to 10%.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management and verbal/written communication skills.
- Ability to work intensely on producing results while working collaboratively with colleagues and at times independently based on the initiative's requirements.
