SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL NURSE

POSITION OBJECTIVE:To provide for the immediate healthcare needs of all HCS students and staff by providing basic nursing care, medication administration, maintaining accurate and confidential medical information on students and staff; and assisting in the training for faculty and staff as needed.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS:The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle.The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. Qualified candidates will possess a servant's heart, and the ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner, and be able to address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana, CPR certified.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations including life threatening situations.
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to prioritize and triage based on acuity
Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
Ability to discern, understand and communicate school specific health regulations and standards
Organization and administrative abilities
Ability to work with confidential and sensitive information with respect to HPPA guidelines
Comfortable providing basic nursing skills with thorough charting
Ability to provide nursing care for students with chronic childhood illness including diabetes and asthma
Proficient in providing nursing care for students ranging from preschool age to teens

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assess health status of students by means of total health assessment.
Implement first aid and care of the sick or injured according to physician approved medical treatment protocol.
Utilize reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Uphold and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, school board and state board of health policy.
Update school health records as needed on shift.
Administer medication pursuant to students' school health records/orders.
Maintain Security of school health supplies.
Serve as a resource person on health issues.
Monitor the immunization status of all students.
Communicate with parents as needed on health needs of students.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position.Position involves sitting at a computer and typing.Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movement, simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine motor and gross motor skills, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing and reaching.Ability to lift patients as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:School nursing office, use of computer/monitor screen; generally works alone.Noise level is typically low with the exception of times between class periods.
